Summary

Paul was reading a newspaper. Catherine was reading a novel. So begins Room on the Sea, André Aciman's scorching and elegiac love-story about a middle-aged man and woman who meet in the bullpen of jury selection and spend a sultry summer’s week trespassing ever further into each other's hearts.

What begins as a flirtation quickly evolves into something deeper, something Paul and Catherine must carry on in secret - and with the understanding that anything more than a casual crush is out of the question. But as the week draws to a close, the end of their rendezvous comes into focus, and Paul and Catherine are forced to decide whether to act on their feelings or leave the fantasy of what could have been to the annals of the past.

By turns scintillating and philosophical, Room on the Sea is a compulsively listenable story of love, fate, and last chances.

A perfectly written story about love in later life

A very enjoyable and relateable story. Would definitely recommend, especially if you are in the 'older' age bracket! Very tender and insightful.

Captivating!

A short novel, beautifully written. Main characters meet while awaiting jury selection. The narrator read without changing his voice for the female character. Some have found this confusing. I found it so refreshing and not difficult to distinguish who was speaking. If I made errors in my judgments as to who was speaking, it mattered little. The flow of dialogue was compelling and heartwarming. For those who have experienced the loss of meaningful conversation, this story is full of hope and delight.

Love and jury duty

Well-educated, mature New Yorkers fall in love at jury duty. A pleasant 2 and a half hour tale.
No problem listening to wonderful Jeff Daniels' rich, relaxed voice, but I really wish he - or the director - had taken the decision to vary the two main characters' voices.
This story is told via an extended conversation over the course of five days. There is very little "he said" and "she said" and unfortunately the narrator does not distinguish the two voices or even pause when switching between them. They flow into one another, resulting in confusion as to who is speaking when.

Finally

A narrator who doesn’t change his/her voice when speaking as the opposite sex. I can no longer listen to hysterically high pitch voices or deep pressed timbres when the reader reads as female/ male.
By now I only pick books by narrators who can elevate any novel to a delightful listen.
Juliette Stevenson, Rosamund Pike, Eduardo Bellini and Steven Weber come to mind.
Unfortunately I had to skip very many books who I know are worthy of best reviews due to the very poor selection of narrators Audible offers.

Beautiful love story

Andre Aciman uses words as if adding spices to a dish. As a 70 year old woman, he captures quite accurately the feelings of knowing love, having lost love and the rare opportunity of finding love again.
I throughly enjoyed this short story.
Jeff Daniels is brilliant as a reader!

Very touching and romantic.

It made me revive my own life’s story and deep feeling for the almost forgotten past. It’s a sweet sadness that probably lies within all of us, if we can conjure up the language to express it. I’m nearly 90.

Sweet. Touching. Relatable.

Something about this story struck a chord with me. Maybe because I’m at a certain age where I long for an experience such as this. I want to know what happens next…

Nicely done.

This short novel is loaded with great settings, characters, dialogue, and the realities of aging. I highly recommend it. It’s the kind of story that keeps you wondering about the questions it raises.

What a marvelous writer!

Superbly captures human emotions and conversations through compelling words and dialogs. Characters are so real. I want to go back and listen all over again so as not to miss a nuance.
