Summary

In this at-once hilarious and heartbreaking series, In-Depth Market Research Interviews with Dead People, Alison Espach explores our collective idiosyncrasies, neuroses, and desires through the consumer choices, big and small, that we face every day.

Caroline’s mattress had nothing to do with her untimely death at the age of 28—this, she wants Tempur-Pedic’s market research representative to know. But as she reflects on her first ever mattress purchase and their interview progresses, Caroline dives into the circumstances and decisions that led her and Nicholas—her boyfriend, 10 years her senior and prone to sleeping on the floor—to that particular bed in that particular shopping plaza. Ultimately, Caroline has the opportunity to reckon with the struggles she faced near the end of her life, and the story of a complex, bold young woman emerges.

Wonderfully intimate glimpse into a life.

This is such a unique concept by author, Alison Espach and beautifully written. As the title suggests, this is an interview with a young woman, who is deceased, by a market researcher, who is not. The fact that the interviewee is dead gives the interview an almost objective perspective as death seems to have provided a distance from the recollections of the events surrounding the time that the Temper Pur mattress was purchased. We get to observe close hand the unfolding of a relationship, it's demise and its aftermath and the whole is delivered with feeling, humour and occasionally, real sadness. I loved how the market researcher is entirely single minded in her pursuit of details relating to the Temper Pur's performance, apparently oblivious to the humanity of both the woman she interviews and the content of her story.
I really liked the central carachte; she is never snide or cranky, is generous and is accepting when acknowledging her own involvement in her death. Although this story is emotional, it is never maudlin and did not lower my mood . As soon as it ended, I replayed it to listen for a second time.
The actresses, Susan Savoy and Elizabeth Evans (coincidentally my Great Grandmother's first and last names, though she was always 'Tinny') were marvellous and gave rich and wholly believable performances which enriched my listening experience.
I'm looking forward to listening to the other two stories in this series.

"Soft."

The third and arguably the best of the series of market research in depth interviews with dead people: a cooky idea for some in depth examination more of the people interviewed than the topic under discussion. This time an actress is asked about her Tempur-pedic matress.
Both interviewer and interviewed are narrated by different people: Elizabeth Evans and Suzanne Savoy. Funny yet also sad.

Available for free with the Audible Plus programme, this is well worth a read - only just under an hour in length

Espach is a Wizard of Intimate Pain & Emotion!

I'm gutted to have finished this trilogy of short stories because I have lobed them and the phenomenal performances so very much. Espach truly is a maestro of heartbreak and reflection with the posthumous product interview being such a glorious amusing and disarming framing device.

All three stories have truly been perfection in short stories/ audio dramas and performances. I'm in awe.

hilarious

they have taken a silly or flimsy story line. But it makes it even more hilarious. It is well written and extremely well performed.

Not comedy but touching

Love the concept. Very touching story about typical young adult screwups. Very well acted too.
