It all begins the night a leaflet comes through the door of unsuccessful novelist Herman Orff, promising a magical cure for writer's block. The strange treatment plunges him into a hallucinatory London dream world populated by figures mythical and real: a severed talking head, Vermeer's girl with a pearl earring, his lost love Luise and, beneath it all, the Kraken awaiting. Poet, artist, visionary and author of the unofficial English national anthem 'Jerusalem', William Blake is an archetypal misunderstood genius. In this radical new biography, we return to a world of riots, revolutions and radicals, discuss movements from the Levellers of the sixteenth century to the psychedelic counterculture of the 1960s, and explore the latest discoveries in neurobiology, quantum physics and comparative religion to look afresh at Blake's life and work—and, crucially, his mind.

In 1912, 18-year-old Edwin St. Andrew crosses the Atlantic, exiled from English polite society. In British Columbia, he enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and for a split second all is darkness, the notes of a violin echoing unnaturally through the air. The experience shocks him to his core. Two centuries later, Olive Llewelyn, a famous writer, is travelling all over Earth, far away from her home in the second moon colony.

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

His family, too, are giving him cause for concern. His son, Nelson, is a wreck of a man, a cocaine addict with shattered self-respect. Janice, his wife, has decided that she wants to be a working girl. And as for Pru, his daughter-in-law, she seems to be sending out signals to Rabbit that he knows he should ignore but somehow can't.

Shocking and controversial when it was first published, The Grapes of Wrath is Steinbeck's Pultizer Prize-winning epic of the Joad family, forced to travel west from Dust Bowl-era Oklahoma in search of the promised land of California. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires and powerlessness, yet out of their struggle Steinbeck created a drama that is both intensely human and majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Story
My name's Griz. I've never been to school, I've never had friends, in my whole life I've not met enough people to play a game of football. My parents told me how crowded the world used to be, before all the people went away, but we were never lonely on our remote island. We had each other, and our dogs. Then the thief came. He told stories of the deserted towns and cities beyond our horizons. I liked him - until I woke to find he had stolen my dog. So I chased him out into the ruins of the world.

Stunning!
The reader really brought this challenging book to life!
I read and enjoyed Ridley Walker, however, this Audible reader created a stunning and colourful world in my head. His style of reading and his pronunciation of the text formed tangible scenes and images for me and made the book so much more exciting and accessible.
Well done!

and my brother's recommendation read this in the 1980s and I have been waiting for a very long time for an audiobook. it would have been very easy for this to disappoint but it absolutely doesn't - it hits the nail on the head, the atmosphere, the language, everything this is the real deal!

When did this happen? Why wasn’t I told?
I have lost count of the years waiting for this to happen. I used to check pretty regularly but I guess I’d given up to the inevitability of this never happening then “bang” it arrives while I’m not even looking.
So happy. Such an excellent book and the narration is all I could have hoped for.
My one caveat is that maybe you should experience reading the book first before listening. The grammar and spelling has a poetry and richness that no one could ever hope to reproduce in an audiobook.

Does Russell Hoban`s cult classic justice.
A brilliant performance from the narrator who brings Hoban`s dialect to life and gives each of the characters an individual voice which keeps the readers interest .The quality of the narration really adds to the enjoyment of this story and helps conjure a vivid picture of this post apocalyptic vision. Hoban`s original novel is a great piece of writing with increasing relevance in our current times .I would thoroughly recommend this to other listeners. A MUST listen.
