Iceberg Slim
About this listen
Editor reviews
Iceberg Slim, known as the literary progenitor of gangster rap, was incarcerated several times in his life for pimping, along with many other crimes. During his last stretch in prison, Slim wrote the autobiographical best seller Pimp, which provided an unflinching look at the criminal underworld he frequented.
In 1976, Slim recorded Reflections, a collection of spoken word performances against a jazz background by the Red Holloway Quartet. Slim is a true raconteur who enjoys the sounds of words as much as their meanings, setting his tales of sex, drugs, money, and violence to rhyming couplets. Listeners will find this unique, street-smart recording an irresistible masterpiece.

This man’s prose is like a wonderful painting, like sitting behind the artist, watching in wonder as he throws open the doors to bring to life characters and tales of a time and place I’d never have known if not for him.
He changed my life. This has awakened all his characters in my head and I must read all his works again. No one is beyond redemption. I never met Iceberg but I will always love him like a brother.
A beautiful painting in my ears
