Summary

A 40-something single dad, a 20-something hockey star, and a whole lot of baggage. No, this couldn’t possibly blow up in their faces.

Officer Geoff Logan has his plate full. His cop’s salary and Marine retirement aren’t enough to make ends meet. He’s got war wounds and demons that are in it for the long haul. His teenagers are, well, teenagers, plus they’re pissed that he left the boyfriend they loved. Can’t a guy catch a break?

Seattle Snowhawks center Asher Crowe has it all. A seven-figure salary. A literal house on a hill. A stable, loving relationship with an amazing boyfriend. At least, that’s what the world sees. Behind closed doors, he’s been living in a private hell, and when he finally works up the courage to end things, his boyfriend refuses to go quietly.

One call to the cops, and suddenly Geoff and Asher’s paths cross. But is the connection between them simple chemistry? Kindred spirits? Or just a pair of lonely hearts looking for a hot distraction?

And even if it’s more than physical, is there really a future for two men from such vastly different worlds? Especially when the past comes knocking?

I was underwhelmed

The story was ok. Both men were nice and liked each other so all the drama came from both ex-boyfriends. I am always disappointed by the way Witt handles the mandatory trouble in the relationship. It is always and afterthought with her, and as easily solved as someone just changing his mind.
Narration was good. I won't read the rest.

A thoughtful and insightful story

There are mixed reviews on audible regarding this book and its narrators which puzzles me because I was captivated by both the story, and the two excellent performances delivered by Nick Russo and Michael Ferraiuolo.

LA Witt writes compassionately about a subject I know little about, and it really made me think, so much so that I asked my son-in-law, who is a U.K. police officer, if he is often called to domestic abuse situations involving only men. His reply was that no, most men won’t call for help as they’re usually afraid of what others might think; that it might somehow render them as weak in the eyes of their peers. He has done training on the subject, however, and has attended a few call-outs in his career of the kind both Geoff and Asher found themselves in.

I found the tangle these two lovely men found themselves in both poignant and sad and quite distressing; Asher’s tangible fear that he wasn’t safe from his abusive ex boyfriend even after he’d taken almost every step he could with the help of Geoff, the police officer who is called out to the very public break-up. And then there’s the private hell Geoff has been dealing with: PTSD left over from twenty years of war and the marines, his children’s unawareness (his fault, he acknowledges), and their quiet disapproval of his decision to cut his mentally abusive, manipulative ex out of their lives. If not for Geoff’s ex wife and also his very understanding female police partner, he would have been alone - these two women and Geoff’s children were all very believable and likeable secondary characters.

But together Geoff and Asher begin to heal each other, kindred spirits dealing silently and bravely with their private hell. The stars were aligned the night Geoff answered a call to the restaurant where Asher finally finds the courage to end his relationship with his boyfriend who then went on a violent, and very public rampage.

The whole, very well researched and compassionate story, highlights how very hard it is for abuse victims, both men and women, to get the help they need. I’ll admit to feeling irritated when Asher couldn’t bring himself to go the final step towards a restraining order. But after the author explains, through Asher’s words, that this would then be public, especially in these days of the internet, and he felt, would then define him for ever, I began to understood what he was up against. Very scary for any victim to move on and live a normal life with people forever judging - especially in the very high profile hockey world that Asher lives as the centre for the Seattle Snowhawks. He’s already been brave enough to out himself as a gay man but this is just one step too far for him to take.

A very compelling and addictive story, LA Witt. I did not find the age gap between the two MC’s a problem - love is love - this book is not for anyone who feels the need to judge regarding gender or age. However, if you are looking for a beautiful love story with two delicious MC’s, a little broken perhaps, but still repairable, then look no further because you will love it.

I had absolutely no problem with either narrator, and I’m *very* picky regarding who I spend time listening to. Both are consummate professionals with pleasing voices. Both articulate the characters perfectly; Michael voicing the calm, steady, older police officer, Geoff, and Nick a perfect Asher - mid twenties, slightly boyish but not immature, very anxious and forever second guessing himself after years of physical abuse. These two men deserve each other after what they’ve been through and I loved them; the dual, expert performances delivered by these two narrators brought the whole story alive for me. One last comment - potential listener, you will not be disappointed when Asher meets Geoff’s children! The chance encounter made my insides go all gooey!
