Summary
Love is cheap. Love is cruel. Love can’t save us.
Victor Lang had everything—looks, money, fame. A chance to become the greatest swimmer in history. Until a failed dope test brought him crashing down.
According to the rumors, he turned into a recluse, a drug addict, a whore. Broken beyond repair. Incapable of love.
And for some reason, he’s set his sights on me.
A freak accident in his pool throws me into a world of wealth and status and people who are willing to do anything to get what they want. Before I know it, I’m being paid to fly to Italy and pose as his boyfriend. Trapped at his side, I learn what it means to truly hate someone.
Turns out, that’s exactly what he wants.
I can’t save him, and I can’t love him. But as things fall apart and I discover the truths he’s hiding, I learn that hate can be greater than love—an obsession, a prayer, dark days and darker nights, a need to be the only one who hurts him. Hate can heal the worst wounds love leaves behind.
But I have problems of my own, a broken spirit and loved ones to protect. And I’m scared to face the things he’s waking up inside of me.
A gritty, emotional, epic hate-to-love slow burn with an inexperienced top and his bratty bottom, hurt/comfort, obsession, and healing.
Contains dark themes, adult content, and potential triggers, though every effort was made to portray them thoughtfully and sensitively.
Specific triggers (potential spoilers): sexual abuse (off the page), suicidal ideation, drug abuse, disordered eating, trauma, death, mental illness, homophobic language

wouldn't recommend at all!
Story 2.5 stars
I was bored 75% of the time and just wanted it to end. I finished only cause I wanted to know what the heck happened to Victor to make him such a jerk. I didnt like the character at all. Yes something horribly tragic happened to him but he keeps it secret til the bitter end and it was really hard to feel for him and not hate him when he's so abbrasive and u dont know why. It made me not care about the outcome of their relationship. I also found the plot ridiculously absurd.
I will also note there is a very offensive ableist joke thrown in mid book and just cant imagine what the authors thinking was there to make fun of amputees, who can swim great for the record.
Narration = 4 stars.
Stephen Dexter (Victors pov) 5 stars and JF Harding (Ethans pov) 3 stars. The dialog parts were great but the parts where he was reading what was going on were an emotionless, robotic tone

Amazing story and narration!
I’m honestly still not even sure how to write this review because this book was so gut-wrenchingly emotional nothing I write in 5-10 sentences will be able to convey that properly. I’m sure part of that is from the incredible audiobook narration by Michael Gallagher &Theo Sinclair but I'm even more certain that it all stems from the raw and poetic writing from Riley Nash. This was my first Riley read and to say I am now a fan for life is a major understatement.
At its core, this book is the gritty, painful, and healing story of two broken souls, that have been failed over and over by the systems and people around them, who are thrust together via romance book tropes (fake relationship anyone), and find something beautiful together.
I loved every single second.

Absolutely amazing
I’ve read this book, but this audio hits different, the narrators were amazing, I couldn’t stop listening. My poor victor I love him so much, the stuff he went through was so awful he ripped me apart. Ethan was perfect for him, patient and kind and caring but pushed victor when needed. He was his shoe support system and without him victor withdraw not have come out the other side. There relationship was perfection.

Nice Performances by Harding & Dexter
Riley Nash’s Hold Me Under is an enemies to lovers romance with angst, emotionally damaged characters, and family drama. I did enjoy the performances of the two narrators in the audio edition.
J.F. Harding, portraying the bratty, rude, and very damaged Victor, brings an interesting depth to the character which helped make this guy more interesting.
Stephen Dexter is a new voice actor for me, and I’m impressed. The role of Ethan is intense and demanding, and Mr. Dexter won me over with his ability to portray this young man.
Fans of these two narrators may want to give Hold Me Under a try.

Hold Me Under
Well executed - the writing/story and the narration. Both are well done. The writing is really well done. The characters and story have complexity. There is angst. I enjoyed and recommend it.

Emotional read
This is a dark book. I LIKE dark books. This was my first Riley Nash and I have to say I leapt on the second book in the series, and have the third on my radar screen.
Victor had it all. A spot on the USA swim team heading to the Rio Olympics, several records under his belt, and a good chance to bring home the gold.
His fall from grace was ignominious at best. After testing positive for a banned substance, he slunk away to a mansion daddy bought him to live in a haze of hookups and increasingly despondent days.
Until the gardener falls into the pool.
Victor rescues the poor man, but, in the end, maybe it’s Ethan who will wind up saving him.
A confluence of events finds Victor and Ethan in Europe, pretending to be boyfriends. But what happens when fake becomes real? Is Victor up to the challenge of being partner for a man who has so many responsibilities? Or is he just going to be the jerk everyone expects him to be?
This book covers some dark themes, listed in the synopsis. I was intrigued enough and riveted – at first by the performances and, eventually, by the story. I wanted to see if Ethan and Victor could find their happily ever after.
Stephen Dexter is a good narrator and I enjoyed his performance. JF Harding is a stellar narrator and he did a great job too. This book might be dark, but it’s totally worth going to the dark place in order to get to the light.

Perfect performance
This is a tough book to review and rate . It has ups and downs. It's an emotional rollercoaster, for sure.
The audio is amazing, both performances were great, and just listening to them was worth it.
I was drawn to Ethan from the beginning. He's grumpy and he's almost rude in his attitudes, but he has his reasons to be bitter and angry at the world. I could relate and understand him. I loved how he tries to give his mother what she needs, and I loved his memories of happier days with his cousin and family. Those were great scenes, though melancolic.
Now Victor, he is just unbearable. He's mean and he says the most hurtful things to everyone and anyone, for no reason at all. It's almost impossible to feel sorry for him, even as the story moves on and shows the reader that Victor has his own issues.
Some scenes are overly unrealistic, with some crazy dialogs. The plot about Victor's father and the campaign is also unbelievable, at least the way it was portrait.
I couldn't really understand the MCs as a couple, I never felt the romantic connection. It felt to me like they were more leaning on each other for emotional support than for being in love.
The best part about this story, though, is how these guys struggle to survive in the middle of all the turmoil of their lives.

Enthralling
Hold Me Under is the first book in the Water, Air, Earth, Fire series, and made me an instant fan of Riley Nash. This book, set in the contemporary world but with a fictional Olympic swimming team, ripped my heart out and then stuffed it back into my chest to beat rapidly with each word. I was completely unprepared for how much I’d be hooked to this story but at the same time, so on edge because I wanted so much for Victor and Ethan to get their happy ending but I had no idea how Riley was going to accomplish that. But that happy ending was perfection. Once I finished this book I went and immediately bought the audiobook for the second book in the series because I just didn’t want to say goodbye to these characters. I want to see glimpses of their happy lives as they heal and navigate the next phase of their journey. I’m also invested in Gray, one of the side characters in this book.
The audiobook was a duel narration with JF Harding and Stephen Dexter. I’m a huge fan of JF Harding, but I was not familiar with Stephen Dexter previously. Together, they did a fantastic job of narrating and voicing all the characters. I was hanging onto their every word and felt transported into the story. The audiobook production was also well done and overall I thoroughly enjoyed this listening experience.

Hold Me Under
Such a beautiful and emotional story that can be difficult to listen to at times so please take note of the trigger warnings.
I loved Victor and Ethan’s characters, they were written so convincingly and heartfelt.
Riley Nash left me broken and then built me up again with this sophisticated storyline.
I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Terrific Story & Narration🎧 Gripping & Intense!
Wow, this book takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride, one that you can not pull yourself away from. It is my first book written by Riley Nash and she certainly grabbed my attention with her impressive writing style and ability to create such a detailed and complex story that moves you like no other. Her characters are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with, they are easy to care about too, even when they are at their lowest. And when we first meet Victor Lang, he seems to be at his lowest or spiraling towards his lowest, and his story is not an easy one and neither was his life. A former athlete, an Olympian swimmer, disgraced and scandalized after getting caught using performance-enhancing drugs. A scandal that ruined his career and possibly his life, he became a recluse, but his rich daddy enabled him over the years and now wants him to work. Ethan is a dutiful son, struggling to make ends meet with paying bills and making sure his mother gets the care she needs for her cognitive issues and care, since he can not leave her on her own. Working for a lawn company, he gets sent to the home of an athlete he and his cousin idolized when they were younger, that was before his career tanked because of the doping scandal. While working in his yard he gets a glimpse of Victor who catches him watching him, their first meeting was not a friendly one, but Victor’s father witnesses their interaction and since Ethan is the first person his son responded to, he wanted to hire Ethan to work with Victor. You would think his father was doing this out of the goodness of his heart, but their relationship is and has been a dysfunctional one. Ethan could use the money and hopefully get better care for his Mom. When he offered more money to accompany Victor for a modeling gig, his father set up, he jumps on it. These two could not be more different from each other, coming from completely different worlds, yet they worked and Ethan, who has a caring heart of gold is just what Victor needs, but Ethan also opens his eyes and reflects on his own life too. The author makes these two work to get thru their issues and to their happily ever after and their journey is not a smooth one, there are many obstacles and bumps along the way. There is never a dull moment in this book and there are scenes that wreck you, gut wrenching and heartrending scenes, but in the end you find out why, what and who and once the truth comes out, healing can begin. Riley Nash, thank you for this amazing story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 And for the wonderful narration, J.F. Harding and Stephen Dexter are the perfect cast to bring these characters to life and do so with a complete understanding of the character they were portraying and were believable in every role they played. You could hear how much heart they put into their performance as they captured the character’s emotions and had you feeling every single one. These versatile voice artists are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another fantastic performance.

Absolutely fabulous
Every aspect of this audio was perfection. First off we have a fantastic story with a terribly broken character Victor. Ethan is the yin to his yang. The way they go through major struggles to get to their HEA is heartbreaking. JF Harding, and Stephen Dexter are just perfect. What a great combination. I’d love to see them narrating together again. Highly recommended.

Hold Me Under
This is the first book in the Water, Air, Earth, Fire series. This book is about Victor and Ethan. Victor almost made it to the Olympics for swimming, until a huge scandal disqualified him. Ethan is at his whits ends trying to care for his mother. Ethan gets propositioned by Victor’s father to fake date Victor for a dating App add. This book is full of several trigger warnings. I just love how Victor and Ethan truly complete each other. J. F. Harding and Stephen Dexter did an amazing job narrating this book.

omg, this book was really good, at 1st I was like Victor was a freaking brat. but after chapters 3or4 I was like okay he's very lost, and the way his relationship with his dad was a bit off. but Ethan knew something was up, and he hated him but also wanted to help him. and at the same time, they both were falling in love with each other. and to be honest they both need one another. best love story ❤️ 💕 to be honest I want more.

Heartbreakingly Beautiful
This was one of my favorite books of 2022. Getting to experience Victor & Ethan's story again in audio was amazing. It brought back all of the feelings from the first time I read this plus more. The narrators really brought these characters to life. They really put emotion into the story. From the absolute heart-wrenching bits to the sexy scenes to the pure emotional depth - the narrators did amazing. I couldn't tell which I loved more but they both did such a great job bringing their characters to life.
As for the story - it's not an easy read by any means. At first glance it's enemies-to-lovers with a fake dating trope thrown in there (and ONLY ONE BED 😎). But it is also so, so, so much more. This is a story about two broken boys who find their way together despite the odds. Of overcoming trauma and finding that one person who makes you feel safe, and loved.
The animosity at the beginning of the book is no joke and these two REALLY don't like each other. But then there is this beautiful slow burn that happens. There are some of the absolute sweetest small moments between these two that absolutely killed me (the gelato scene!!).
Victor is so very broken (check the TWs as there are a lot) and this boy hurt my heart. Ethan, despite having a lot of his own personal grief, responsibilities, etc., really takes it on himself to figure out how he can care for Victor. How to "save" him since it appears no one else will. Ethan is simply amazing - he is boyfriend goals and Victor? He is the most lovable, sassy, broken boy I think I've ever read.
This is a beautiful story and I absolutely loved it. I fell hard for these two.
And the writing was just plain beautiful. I'll leave you with some quotes:
““It hurts too much,” he whispers. “I need to quit you slow, or it’s going to kill me.””
"If love can see us now, it must be ashamed that it has nothing to offer."
"No one ever comes back for me. Until you."

The Audiobook
J.F. Harding and Stephen Dexter do an amazing job narrating this book. Both are passionate and great actors. You feel each of the MCs struggles and they really has you listning to the storyline.
Please take note of the author's TWs - there are lots of confronting issues, although most of them are off-page.
