Summary

He was the unlikeliest of presidential candidates - dismissed by opponents as a movie actor, a right-winger trying to undo the work of liberals stretching back to Franklin Roosevelt. Yet Ronald Reagan made it to the White House, taking office in a time of economic turmoil, waning prestige abroad, and a general dampening of the American spirit.

Reagan's patriotism, wit, and optimism lifted the nation and brought it through several crises. An effective leader who understood the power of words, stagecraft, and symbolism, Reagan was a paradoxical blend of ideology and pragmatism. Even as he increased the tension underlying the Cold War with the Soviet Union, he embarked on a series of summits with Mikhail Gorbachev that helped defuse the arms race. When he left office, prosperity had returned and the Soviet state had collapsed.

People around the world still revere him for the dawning of what he called "morning in America." Here is his story.

Reagan

This was a free book for me, and I am fascinated by American politics.
Having grown up in the 80s I knew of Star Wars, Thatcher and Gorbachev; but there’s so much more.
I found it a totally fascinating book discussing his highs and lows both professionally and at home. A very informative book and interesting whatever you think of his political ideas.

Are political leaders like this extinct?

Well read. Excellent sequence of major events along with his diary and context of the world at the time.

Good light reading

A pretty high level look at the life of President Regan. I would have liked more detail but all in all a very interesting book.

Good book, but his 2nd term seems rushed

It was informative and brings out Reagan’s best qualities. Only about 10% of the book covers his 2nd term, which I found disappointing. I would have preferred more details on that time frame. It felt rushed. Loved everything else though.

A man who was both sane and good led America! Those were the days.

So different from the dimwits, freaks and evil snake oil salesmen who have led us this century. God rest his soul. Lovely story well told. Not a deep dive but great for getting the basic framework of this great man’s life across.

Good book to give you highlights of Reagan

I enjoyed this book. It gave me a new perspective of the former President. Their is little to no political commentary. it gave a history of his life.

Great book!!!!

Normally I don’t get books about people I am not very familiar with by that was a great read I meant a lot about a president I wish I was alive for. Definitely a great read and something to get lost in for a good road trip.
