Sure to rank as one of the greatest aviation memoirs ever written, Viper Pilot is an Air Force legend's thrilling eyewitness account of modern air warfare. From 1986 to 2006, Lt. Col. Dan Hampton was a leading member of the Wild Weasels, the elite Air Force fighter squadrons whose mission is recognized as the most dangerous job in modern air combat. Weasels are the first planes sent into a war zone, flying deep behind enemy lines purposely seeking to draw fire from surface-to-air missiles and artillery. They must skillfully evade being shot down - and then return to destroy the threats, thereby making the skies safe for everyone else to follow.

Marine pilot Brad Austin and his carrier-based F-4 Phantom group fly into the heart of enemy territory daily without fear, but the rules of engagement hinder them nearly as much as the North Vietnamese. Restricted from attacking the enemy's MiG bases, Austin and the other American pilots are vulnerable to attack without the ability to retaliate, a weakness that tragically leads to the death of Austin's wingman. Consumed by the need to avenge his comrade, Austin goes one-on-one with the enemy in a battle that ultimately proves in war there can be no rules.

This is the story of my fellow aircrew at the heart of Operation Desert Storm, almost none of whom had any prior experience of armed combat. It is the story of the Tornado’s missions, of those who did not return - and of the families who watched and waited as one of the most complex conflicts in recent history unfolded live on television. It is a story of untold fear and suffering, and astounding courage in the face of what, for us, was hitherto unimaginable adversity.

Story
When the Falkland Islands were invaded by Argentina in April 1982, Britain’s immediate response was to send a task force. But behind the pomp and bravado of its departure, a sober reality lurked. A mere 20 Sea Harriers operating from two aircraft carriers would take on the might of the Argentine air force, some 200 planes strong. The MOD estimated that within four days and against such formidable air power, half the harriers would likely be lost. To reinforce that meagre force, and in just three weeks, the Navy formed, trained and equipped a brand new squadron from scratch.

Story
Paul Tremelling was just seven years old when he watched the Royal Navy's Sea Harriers leave their home base in Somerset to do battle against the Argentine Air Force in the Falklands War. Two decades later, he would join this exclusive club, one of an elite band of Fleet Air Arm fighter pilots, charged with standing in the way of Her Majesty's enemies. This is the story of what it takes to make it in the dog-eat-dog arena of fighter combat. In the cockpit or crew room, the pressure is relentless, the humour merciless. It's no place for the faint-hearted.

In the desolate middle of the largest ocean on earth, two great navies approached, one bent on conclusive battle, the other lying in ambush. Six months after Pearl Harbor, Yamamoto again crossed the Pacific with the largest and most powerful naval armada the world had ever seen, this time to finish the job. Nimitz waited for him with what he had, placed exactly where he needed it. Both admirals depended on their fliers, some veterans of battle, others raw and unproven. Striking first meant decisive victory.

In Pearl Harbor, they pose the question of how the presence of but one more man within the Japanese attacking force could have transfigured the war.

Summary
For a moment Wilson froze and looked at the white-helmeted pilot who sat high on the nose of the colossal fighter. Across the small void, he saw the pilot's eyes peer over his mask. Dark, chilling eyes. Wilson kicked right rudder to slide closer and jam any chance for a bandit gunshot. When the bandit pulled all the way over, almost on its back but in control, he cursed in frustration at what he knew was coming next. The hostile fighter reversed over the top in a negative-g maneuver, his nose tracking down on Wilson like a falling sledgehammer in slow motion. Horrified, Wilson realized he faced an imminent snapshot. With the little air speed he had, he inverted his Hornet to avoid the attack. His aircraft still rolling, Wilson saw that the monster had another weapon at its disposal.

Enjoyable for a very specific audience
I really enjoyed this, but mainly because I am learning to fly a (virtual) Hornet in DCS World. There is a lot of detail on procedures and controls that would probably slow things down too much for the general reader but for me we’re fascinating and gave a bit of colour and detail to things I had been reading about elsewhere, as well as getting a better idea of what the pilots get up to when they’re not in the cockpit.
I did grow to enjoy the characters, and found myself rooting for them. My only criticisms here are that there is little ambiguity - each is basically either a goody or a baddy with no redeeming features. Also it is hard to criticise the writing of female characters when I am male myself, but they spend much of their non-flying time thinking about men - it is a little bit cringey at times.
The flying scenes are great if you have enough background knowledge to understand what is going on. Even the non-combat scenes can have an enormous amount of tension.
Highly recommended if you are interested in naval aviation, but probably not otherwise.

Naval Saints?
While this story is exciting and technically interesting, I couldn't get past the felling that it belonged in some modern propaganda book somewhere. We all know that the people in armed forces across the world are courageous and worthy of respect but this almost drifts into nauseating overtones of "USA the Holy". If you can get past this then you will find the story exciting, emotional and certainly heart felt, given that it was written by a retired USN officer.

As an avid Naval Aviation fan this audiobook was extremely enjoyable to listen to. The author does a fantastic job of taking you out of your own life and in to the shoes of a fighter pilot, I really felt part of the Squadron and part of the air group it was a fascinating look in to what life on board a carrier might be like.

Fantastic Read for Military/Aviation Enthusiasts!
I listened to this book in its entirety and it genuinely made my commutes to work the highlight of the day. It is very well performed and written, crafted very well for the military thriller market. That is to say, do not expect to be reading the greatest thing ever written ever, just extremely good by military fiction standards.
The scenarios are grounded in reality, and while at the edge of plausible sometime, are not outside the realm of possibility. There are many low-rent military thrillers out there that you could waste your time with. Captain Miller's books here, especially this one, out-classes all of them.
The story takes places around the Persian Gulf, showing all sides from command, to the pilots, to the opponents. There is enough characterization and emotional investment that the events of the story have an impact, but it does not shy away from the hard military enthusiast details.
That said, it is very much technical in that aspect, as the happenings with F/A-18s and other aircraft are declared with stunning accuracy and detail. But it would read as a long string of acronyms or techno-aviation jargon for those uninitiated. To really dig into this book, you should be probably have some knowledge of military aviation.
To hear a voice actor paraphrase and use onomatopoeia imitating the bleeps and jingles inside a cockpit is something to behold, and done very well.
In closing, this is a great listen and a great book - For those into military aviation fiction. Fully recommended, if that is your area of interest.

Great Insights Into Naval Aviation
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Unfortunately, there were times I had to rewind and relisten to certain parts because I got lost in the midst of overwhelming naval jargon. As an former army guy, who spent time working with the navy, it brought back some memories - both good and bad. The story is engaging as he weaves just the right amount of action to keep my interest and now I find I want to know more about Lt Cdr Wilson - so I guess I'm buying the next book in the series.

Well written and delivered
This is not a typical selection for me and while it seemed slow to start, the authors’ skilled writing kept me engaged. Ultimately I was drawn in more and more and found myself really enjoying it. I can see where a military background or history of service would heighten this impression as the in depth descriptions painted a clear picture for even myself, someone that has not had the privilege and honor of serving our country. My gratitude to the author for providing me with a clearer picture of what our men and women in the Navy do to help safeguard our country. My deepest appreciation to all those who have served, and all those who currently serve our nation.
