Story
What if they hadn't gone? That's the question Clementine can't stop asking herself. It was just a backyard barbeque. They didn't know their hosts that well. They were friends of friends. They could so easily have said no. But she and her husband, Sam, said yes, and now they can never change what they did and didn't do that beautiful winter's day. Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One yapping dog. It's a normal weekend in the suburbs. What could possibly go wrong?

"I write this sitting at the kitchen sink" is the first line of a novel about love, sibling rivalry, and a bohemian existence in a crumbling castle in the middle of nowhere. Cassandra Mortmin's journal records her fadingly glamorous stepmother, her beautiful, wistful older sister, and the man to whom they owe both their isolation and poverty: Father. The author of one experimental novel, and a minor cause celebre, he has since suffered from writer's block and is determined to drag his family down with him.

In 1973 Jane Tennison, aged 22, leaves the Metropolitan Police Training Academy to be placed on probationary exercise in Hackney, where criminality thrives. We witness her struggle to cope in a male-dominated, chauvinistic environment, learning fast to deal with shocking situations with no help or sympathy from her superiors. Then comes her involvement in her first murder case. No one witnessed the savage beating of a tragic young girl who, the postmortem reveals, was pregnant when she died.

Before Prime Suspect
- By Amazon Customer on 12-08-16
Summary
A special 25th anniversary edition narrated by the author.
Discover the deliciously dark and fantastically funny number one best seller about a woman living life rather too well and being whisked away from it all, from the number one best-selling author of Grown Ups.
'How did it end up like this? Twenty-seven, unemployed, mistaken for a drug addict, in a treatment centre in the back arse of nowhere with an empty Valium bottle in my knickers....'
Meet Rachel Walsh.
She's been living it up in New York City, spending her nights talking her way into glamorous parties before heading home in the early hours to her hot boyfriend, Luke.
But her sensible older sister showing up and sending her off to actual rehab wasn't quite part of her plan.
She's only agreed to her incarceration because she's heard that rehab is wall-to-wall Jacuzzis, gymnasiums and rock stars going cold turkey - plus it's about time she had a holiday.
Saying goodbye to fun will be hard. But not as hard as losing the man who she realises, all too late, might just be the love of her life....
Critic reviews
“Gloriously funny.” (Sunday Times)
“Irresistible, profound...Keyes' comic gift is always evident.” (Independent)

What a great read! Not read a bad one from this author. Loved the fact she narrated it herself. As the one who created the characters, it was very fitting that she brought them to life herself. Story arc was great, sad, funny, harrowing, enlightening. Well done you!

Beautifully read by the author which made the experience so much better. I loved the characters even though I’m oh the generation of Rachel’s mum and dad, they still resonated with me and made me laugh and sigh, in equal measure. Would highly recommend, and can’t wait to read the next one!

I loved this book, even when Rachel was so frustrating 80% of the time! This was my first Marian Keyes novel and it won't be my last. It was so entertaining yet sad and eye opening all rolled into one. My heart was breaking for Rachel by the end of it all. I will definitely be recommending to friends. I can't believe it was written when I was 5, it hasn't aged at all.
Brilliant narration too. 5/5

Soooo boring!
I have heard so many people rave about this book and this character.
I found this book sooooo boring, the character unremarkable and unrelatable. I had to stop at Chapter 5 because I couldn’t focus on it.
I didn’t enjoy the narration either. Terrible.
It is just really basic chick lit.

Another Great Walsh Family Ride!
Just finished 14 hours of the 25th anniversary edition of this wild, hilarious, and heart filled work of art. It’s a delight to listen to Marian Keyes herself narrating this audiobook, different from the earlier edition. I once heard Marian interview another writer. I was so taken with her that I explored her own work. And as I make my way through her huge list of books, I have never been sorry! Her honest voice stays with me after each story.
