Summary

Pre-order Mark Billingham's pulse-racing new Tom Thorne thriller, The Murder Book, now!

My name is Alice. I'm a police officer. I'm trying to solve a murder on a psychiatric ward. But I'm also a patient.

They were meant to be safe on Fleet Ward: psychiatric patients monitored, treated, cared for. But now one of their number is found murdered, and the accusations begin to fly. Was it one of his fellow patients? A member of staff? Or did someone come in from the outside?

DC Alice Armitage is methodical, tireless, and she's quickly on the trail of the killer.

The only problem is, Alice is a patient too.

Keep your hand poised on the volume control….

Let me start by saying I really do like all the books by Mark Billingham, and Maxine Peake is an outstanding actor….however, she was either shouting, or whispering, so I was constantly either turning the sound down or up again, and missed a considerable amount of the narrative as I couldn’t quite catch what she was saying.
I listen at bedtime and I honestly think I have missed about a third of the story as she moves from dramatic shouty to conspiratorial whispering!

First and not the last!

Well where has this author been hiding from me! This book was absolutely amazing. Normally I can generally get an idea of the 'whodunit' culprit but this truly threw me completely! I couldn't put this Audible choice down, I wanted more and more! It was original, darkly humorous (executed at all the right moments) not at all cheesy as some books can be, when mixing complex topics together with laugh out loud comments from the protagonist and characters. There was obviously a lot of research that went into this book, as such, was acknowledged in the end credits. I urge you to not miss out on this! It was a thrilling, suspenseful work of mystery and insights into a very underrated, understanding of a mental illness. Of which I do not want to mention in my review, so as not to spoil for other listeners! And once more, an appropriate narrator for this book! She really brought it to life and made you feel you're there with her and her journey throughout. Very cleverly written. One author I will be reading and listening to again and again! Many thanks to Mark Billingham and Maxine Peake ☺ it is very rare of me to say " I have honestly enjoyed my lack of sleep " Readers and listeners alike - enjoy

Couldn’t get into this book

The story sound great , the concept was very different, i suppose i am used to Mark Billingham’s narrative . I tried for over 4 hours & hardly anything happened! The mains characters backgrounds could have been done & dusted in half the time .
After 4 hours I just felt i was no further forward
Maxine Peake is an amazing actress & that’s what it felt like , a play rather than a novel .
I returned it after struggling for 4 hours as i realised i no longer cared who killed who & why .
it’s a no from me

Hard work

I really struggled with this, I am a huge fan usually but found this mind numbing, almost giving up more than once. The narration is, in my opinion like being battered, maybe that’s the point, but it certainly distracted me from any enjoyment, forcing myself to listen.
It is stated at the end how hard it was to write, I am afraid it is also very hard to listen to.

Fabulous!

One of the most original crime novels I’ve read in many years. Every box ticked for me. Story, pace, dialogue, characterisation and plot. There’s something very satisfying about knowing you have an unreliable narrator but one you still trust. It’s clever and must have been a hell of a challenge to write! And I couldn’t think of anyone who could have narrated this better. Five stars!!

My book of the year.

Shades of One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Brilliant characterisation of patients. Nobody could have read this better than Maxine Peake - she deserves a radio Oscar for this.

Dream Team

I listen to everything Mark Billingham writes and am never disappointed. Particularly like him narrating his own work… until I heard Maxine Peake reading this. She is brilliant! Not a traditional crime novel setting or plot but characters convincingly and sympathetically drawn. Excellent!

Worried at first

Yes I was worried when I started listening to this book. So unlike mark billingham. I thought oh no he’s gone off ,I’m not going to enjoy this one. But………. It didn’t disappoint. Well I say that but I was disappointed to a degree because it wasn’t his usual writing but it got me hooked and kept me guessing right to the end. I gave it 5/5 because it is a good book with a great story but I do prefer his previous books.

Best narration I’ve ever heard & brilliant story

I absolutely loved this book. Such a compelling story with some really likeable characters. The narration was the best I’ve ever heard. I’m actually sad now it’s finished. Please say you’ll write of Alice again, I’m invested in this character. Out of the hundreds of books I have enjoyed, this is a standout favourite. Honestly, it’s brilliant!

Outstanding.

One of the best books I’ve read this year. The characters were so well drawn I felt I knew and cared about them all. Alice herself was warm and funny and narrator Maxine Peake did a spectacular job of giving her voice. I had the Kindle book version too but frankly it would have been a shame to miss out on the narration. Can’t recommend this one highly enough!
