Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Quiet, the Sunday Times and New York Times best seller by Susan Cain, will permanently change how we see introverts - and how you see yourself.

Our lives are driven by a fact most of us can't name and don't understand: whether we're an introvert or an extrovert. This defines who our friends and lovers are, which careers we choose and whether we blush when we're embarrassed.

At least a third of us are on the introverted side. Some of the world's most talented people are introverts. Without them, we wouldn't have the Apple computer, the theory of relativity and Van Gogh's sunflowers.

Yet extroverts have taken over. Shyness, sensitivity and seriousness are often seen as being negative. Introverts feel reproached for being the way they are.

In Quiet, Susan Cain shows how the brain chemistry of introverts and extroverts differs and how society misunderstands and undervalues introverts. She gives introverts the tools to better understand themselves and take full advantage of their strengths.

Critic reviews

"I can't get Quiet out of my head. It is an important book - so persuasive and timely and heartfelt it should inevitably effect change in schools and offices." (Jon Ronson, The Guardian)

"Susan Cain's Quiet has sparked a quiet revolution...perhaps rather than sitting back and asking people to speak up, managers and company leaders might lean forward and listen." (Megan Walsh, The Times)

"Quiet is a very timely book...maybe the extrovert ideal is no longer as powerful as it was; perhaps it is time we all stopped to listen to the still, small voice of calm." (Daisy Goodwin, The Sunday Times)

A thoughtful and mind-expanding exploration of introversion

If you’ve ever been called ‘shy’, ‘quiet’, ‘sensitive’, or even ‘boring’, you need to read this book. A really thorough examination of what it means to be an introvert or an extrovert, and how we’ve (over) privileged the latter group in Western culture. Fascinating and insightful - written in an unassuming and deeply considered manner. (The author, of course, being an introvert herself).

balanced, thought provoking read

It was a balanced, thought provoking read. A good mix of theory, personal experience and observations on society. Good narration and expression made it very enjoyable. So much of what Cain says about the uniformity of so many aspects of our life experience and the increasingly prevailing wisdom that there is a only one truly desirable personality template rings so true. We should learn to step back and think what really makes a good team. It's unlikely to be where everyone is the same, we should reward introverted personality strength s all the more, whilst continuing to seek the best from the extroverts. The comparison of Western and Asian cultures is particularly thought provoking whilst the description of Tony’s life coaching conferences is quite amusing. Well done Susan Cain for this excellent work.

Great read

A very insightful book, exploring a number of psychological concepts, including compassion. I would recommend to anyone who is psychologically minded and keen to understand themselves and others.

Ode to the introverts

an ode to the power and beauty of introversion, an exceptional argument never to resent our innate nature but to rather embrace it as our greatest of strengths!

Many light bulb moments

This book is useful for all personality types in my opinion. It is packed with many ah ha moments which help to settle untold numbers of confusing and often frustrating events in one's journey through life. My family which includes two teenage boys are having fun with it while I watch them identifying themselves in several situations. First book they have hung around me while I listen.

One of my top books this year

We have two ears and one mouth, so we should use that proportionally! Great book! Everything what Susan talks in her book makes sense. We are all are mix of introvert and extrovert and it is important to recognise and understand inner self and use it as straight. "Quiet" is one of my top books I read this year.

A truly helpful book

Like many readers, I realised I am an introvert from a Myers Briggs test and that realisation helped me understand my reactions to a whole host of situations I face in daily life. This book takes it to a new level. It highlights some excellent strategies for playing to your strengths but also helps you understand how to work with your spouse, your children and your coworkers so that you are caring for their needs as well as your own.
