It is 1955 and Britain is still a Protectorate of Germany. The assassination of the Leader on British soil provoked violent retribution towards British citizens, particularly women. Rose Ransom is amazed even to be alive, her role in the assassination miraculously overlooked. The widowed Queen Wallis reigns, yet some citizens hope that Elizabeth may one day return.
President Eisenhower is to visit Britain and Rose is tasked with briefing Queen Wallis. She finds the queen in a state of paranoia, desperate to return to America. But Wallis, a poker addict, has a trump card - a document so explosive that it will blow the Protectorate apart, should she dare to reveal it.

Couldn’t put it down!
Such a well-researched and engaging book. Cleverly written so you get a really full picture of what life could have been like in this dystopian fantasy. The characters are beautifully written. I love that you can literally trace where the character is walking through the London streets.

If you loved Widowland, stick with this.
This story takes a while to get going, following Widowland, but it is brilliant and difficult to out down.

Intelligent counter factual thriller
If anything, I enjoyed this even more than the first book. The effects of the assassination oh Hitler on occupied Britain are stark and even more sinister than we think at the start of this book. The characters are believable and relatable even if not sympathetic, like Rose’s sister- quite happy to take the advantages of party membership.

What might’ve been!
Well researched, what could’ve happened if the Nazis had achieved their wishes in UK, it’s always the women who are regarded as inferior - until they rise up! That said, this story did have so many loose ends and the main character managed to move all over London, the Home counties and even Germany with such apparent ease that it was a bit far-fetched, even though she was clearly being observed the whole time. To my mind, the ending left so many questions unanswered that I wonder if there’s going to be a third part of this trilogy?
