Summary

So much fun
I'll admit I was nervous about the new Laundry series, but this was rip-roaring fun. I want more of these characters please. The narration was spot on too.

Poor narrator for subject matter
Sorry, but like many other people here the narrator just didn't work for me. I made it an hour in but I really can't get passed the over this, really doesn't feel like the right fit for this book / genre tbh. Don't know why they changed for book 2 (which is annoying of itself as there is no consistency across the series) but to replace the previous narrator (Homor Todiwala) with such a bad interpretation of the story was not a great move

a great romp
Mary Poppins with dinosaurs and machine guns and all kinds of horrid beasties and nasty religious loonies. The ending was quite predictable but the romp was immense fun and the humour got me giggling. It needed excellent narration to work, and got it. A great book when you want a ride with old tropes in new hats and really don't want to think.

Best narration EVER!
I have the audiobook of every Laundry File to date and Imogen Church’s performance has been the best by far. Tremendous passion, a variety of tones and a sardonic sense that’s been missing from the rest of the series. I found the last Laundry novel, Dead Lies Dreaming, to be a bit of a trudge to listen to and doubt I’ll listen to it again. But I will absolutely listen to this novel again due to Ms. Church’s performance.

Book good, audio horrible
Story and plot is okay. Funny as usual, nothing much to report.
Sound is horrible. The actress is using the Tony Robinson (of the early Discworld audiobook notoriety) method of reading the story. Every person has a different voice (yay), however allmost everyone is overacted TO THE MAX (buh). The normal text is read in normal voice level, but dialogue is either normal (hurra), w h i s p e r i n g (buh) or SCREECHING (sigh) - and often in the same sentence, making it allmost imposible to adjust the sound level. And making it absolutly imposible to follow all the dialogue if there're any sounds nearby. So driving a car, washing up or doing the shopping with this book sucks.

Performance is nothing to.worry about
As much as I have loved the Laundry Files as a whole, I nearly gave this one a miss due to the reviews on the narrator's performance. It is no where near as bad as some reviewers would have you believe in my opinion.

Disappointing
As with the first New Management book, this isn't a patch on the Laundry files books. Only the final couple of chapters the story started to improve and pick up any pace.
Also not particularly good narration in my opinion, sorry!

Excellent on every count
This was just amazing and a perfect combination of comic horror fantasy that left me almost crying with laughter. Special note of how well the narrator voiced Mary and the Banks children

At last, a decent narrator!
The last two Laundry Files released on Audible UK were totally ruined by poor narration, but Imogen Church goes a long way to restoring the series with this performance. She takes an 'all-in' approach and the result is what I imagine attending a Christmas panto whilst totally wired on crack would be like.
At first, I found the variations in volume between hushed whispers and full-on screaming to be jarring, but by the halfway point I was basically cheering the narrator on. I know that this version has not been to the taste of all listeners, but for me, Imogen Church raised the overall score as this was not one of the strongest books in the series.
Well done to Imogen and thanks to the New Management for bringing the Laundry Files back to strength!
