About this listen

To Porterhouse College, Cambridge, famous for rowing, low academic standards. and a proud cuisine, comes a new Master, an ex-grammar-school boy, demanding Firsts, women students, a self-service canteen, and a slot-machine for contraceptives. There is considerable opposition to this challenge to the established order, in the form of Skullion, the intransigent porter at Porterhouse, who is determined that the hallowed traditions of the College will never change.©2014 Audible, Inc. Superb story.
Mostly good but some of GRJs characters a bit grating. Was difficult to discern between them at some stages.

Hilarious

This narration of the book makes easier to enjoy all the carrictors and story

Although not the funniest Sharpe novel, Gryff does a good job bringing the characters out. I much prefer PG Wodehouse read by Jonathan Cecil

Great plot, well read

good book spoilt by Gryff Rhys Jones weird accents... don't know why he's done it like this.
Otherwise a really good laugh.

Overacted!

Would you listen to Porterhouse Blue again? Why?

The story is the ultimate irony in that the porter scullion becomes master of Porterhouse by accident and suffers the traditional masters fate of a Porterhouse Blue.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Scullion as he represents traditionalism.

Have you listened to any of Griff Rhys Jones’s other performances? How does this one compare?

havent listened to others but will look out for them now.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no but it lends itself to reading in parts

Any additional comments?

I liked the David Jason portrayal on tv and am glad I bothered to read the book.

Ironic

Watched the movie of this when it came out many years back and really enjoyed it on so decided to try the audiobook and I’m glad that I did!
Is a fast moving interesting story that contains the right level of humour throughout and is brilliantly red by Griff Jones.
One of my real favourite audiobooks here and I listen to an awful lot of them and will doubtless listen to this one again at some point in the future.
I couldn’t recommend this book more.

A trip down memory lane, much enjoyed.

Struggled to finish this book. The narration didn't work for me. I've really enjoyed his books in the past though

Others were better

Perhaps it was Griff Rhys Jones's narration or maybe I just didn't appreciate the humour when I first read this 40-odd years ago, but I found it hilarious. A fine old romp all round. Excellent fun.

Better than I remembered

Where does Porterhouse Blue rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a funny and enjoyable romp that has not dated. Tom Sharpe livened up my teens and it was great to revisit an old friend. Griff's reading is enjoyable and he reads with a relish for the extreme situations the story conjurs up. Just wish the S.African novels and the Thriwback were available.

What other book might you compare Porterhouse Blue to, and why?

Tom Sharpe is unique! It is just a shame his later books lost the mad excess of Wilt, The Throwback and the glorious S.African books.

What about Griff Rhys Jones’s performance did you like?

There was a juicy relish to his reading. The Chaplin especially was excellent. He didn't tire and it worked well throughout. Many thanks. Tom would have loved the reading

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Only to tears of laughter. Inflated condoms up the chimney!!!

Any additional comments?
