About this listen

London, early 1950s. Marcia Beasley of St John's Wood is discovered dead in her home, naked and covered with a coal scuttle. Detective Sergeant Greenleaf is tasked with solving the crime and bringing meaning to her gruesome death, and it seems her whole social circle have secrets to hide and grudges to bear.

Who, for example, is the limping midnight visitor? Is the bibulous priest as ingenious as he seems? And will Mrs Burkiss ever yield her keys to the broom cupboard?

Critic reviews

"A perfect mixture of funny and acerbic, with a cast of colourful characters and a school of well-deployed red herrings, A Little Murder is wholly delightful." (Laura Wilson, author of Stratton’s War)

Too many characters to keep track of. Story quite good but takes some concentrating to really follow it at all times.

Long and a little too complex…

There were a tad too many characters for my liking, I got confused at a point. Otherwise a compelling story. At some point I was convinced almost all of the others had done the deed.

Compelling

I couldn’t finish listening to this book as soon as so long winded and dull.

Boring and long winded

Nicely paced. Well observed. Lots of snobbery and class, mixed with history. A good listen.

Very enjoyable bit of fictional history

I was really enjoying this book. I liked that it had a humorous aspect to it despite being a murder.

I got to chapter 25 and just didn't enjoy it anymore. it seemed to drag out and somehow I just lost interest. very rare for me to do this in a book.

Mixed thoughts on this one

I am never completely relaxed about murder being treated with levity. blah, blah to makeup the ridiculous need for 15 words!

Am engaging little tale with some interesting twists.

This well-plotted, literate and amusing novel was wonderfully enlivened by marvellous narration. Great fun. 15 word minimum is a bore.

Lively tale and wonderful narration

very good, the author has a beautiful turn of phrase. the reader is overall very good, but the two policeman sound exactly the same which is a little confusing at the start.

relaxing mystery to go to sleep to

Once I got used to the style of writing I enjoyed the book. It gave great detail of each character similar to Agatha Christie

Different approach

I have never been so glad to get to the end of a book. The reader did my head in, the story seemed to flit from one place to the next with little context. The characters were very odd and hard to keep track of partly due to all sounding very similar

Long winded
