Summary
Choose: a quick death...or slow poison...
Locked deep in the castle's dungeon, Yelena knows she’ll never be free again. The laws in Ixia are strict, and murderers must be executed, no matter the reason. But just as she’s resigned to her fate, she’s offered an extraordinary reprieve – to be the food taster for the Commander of Ixia.
As the food taster, Yelena will eat the best meals, have a room in the castle, and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander. To make matters worse Valek, the chief of security, deliberately feeds her Butterfly’s Dust – a deadly poison. Only by appearing for her daily antidote can she prevent an agonising death.
As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can’t control. Her life is under threat again, and in order to survive, she must unravel the secrets behind the past she’s been running from.

Will have you hooked from the first chapter
I read this book a number of years ago and the series became one of my favourites, so I was excited that it had finally come out on audio. It does not disappoint!
The narrator is excellent and you very quickly get lost into the story.
Can’t wait to listen to the rest of the series.

I love this book
I’ve loved this book for a long time and have really looked forward to the audiobook. I really enjoyed the audiobook, and think some will love the chapter notes.

Truly immersive with wonderful narration
I wasn’t familiar with the Snyder’s work, but had followed Kristin Atherton’s wonderful narration work here. Yet however good the narration is—and Kristin’s is always excellent—the story must also be compelling and offer characters with whom you enjoy spending time (and an interesting system of magic helps). So it’s fortunate that we have both excellent story and narration in this series, making it a worthwhile indulgence for those who enjoy great audiobooks.

Magical narrator
Kristin Atherton brings this story to life… you really get to know the characters with her sensitivity… I hope Kristin gets to narrate the latter part of the chronicles too

The perfect narrator for my favourite series.
I re-read this series at least every few years, but chose the audio version this time to see if I could get into audio books in general. It's excellent and I have no regrets.

Love this series
So glad we're finally getting an audible version of this series! Excellent performance from the narrator. This is a series I keep finding myself coming back to for whether for comfort or escapism, and my favourite chapter will always be the training exercise that takes place in Snake Forest!

New ‘go to’ version
I’ve read this series several times and was very excited when they were finally made available on Audible UK. They have not disappointed! The story was obviously one I knew well but Kristen Atherton did a wonderful job bringing Yelena and the others to life. Please Audible, can we have some more (i.e. the rest of the “Study” series and the “Glass” - I promise to buy them)?
