Summary

The New York Times best seller from AK Press is now an audiobook — read by Adrienne Maree Brown herself!

How do we make social justice the most pleasurable human experience? How can we awaken within ourselves desires that make it impossible to settle for anything less than a fulfilling life? Author and editor Adrienne Maree Brown finds the answer in something she calls “pleasure activism,” a politics of healing and happiness that explodes the dour myth that changing the world is just another form of work. Drawing on the black feminist tradition, she challenges us to rethink the ground rules of activism.

Her mindset-altering essays are interwoven with conversations and insights from other feminist thinkers, including Audre Lorde, Joan Morgan, Cara Page, Sonya Renee Taylor, and Alexis Pauline Gumbs. Together, they cover a wide array of subjects — from sex work to climate change, from race and gender to sex and drugs — building new narratives about how politics can feel good and how what feels good always has a complex politics of its own.

Building on the success of her popular Emergent Strategy, Adrienne brings her audience experimental, expansive, and innovative ways to meet the challenges that face our world today.

power in pleasure

I want AMB to be my friend! I feel as though Adrienne has given me permission to seek out and explore pleasure, in all its forms and, importantly, to use it as a form of power. I thank her for that.

An invitation to learn how to feel good

The strength is this book lies in the variety of content presented to serve many. Brown as a narrator is playful, earnest, loving and respectful. The audio version has sweet pockets of song and serenity in it. I learned that pleasure is a politik, and how essential it is to build your own manifesto. This is taught through boundaries, self mastery, community, limitations and experimentation. The book is part research, part interviews and part anecdotes. All important to helping inform the healing power of pleasure for our nervous systems.

This book is worth so much to me ❤️

I’m a cryer, I find joy in happy tears so as you can imagine this book made me cry more times than I can count. But can I just thank you for the extreme session of joy tears your laugh at the end gave me. 😭 such a gift.

Words can’t adequately express what this book means to me. It is everything I didn’t know I needed to really begin my journey of finding intentional happiness in my life and feeling pleasure and acceptance with my very willing partner. They’ve been nudging me toward these lessons since we met, but hearing them from a neutral person and a woman I think was the extra push I needed. This book now makes up a major part of my life skills audiobook toolkit and I am so so grateful especially to have heard it read and sang in AMB’s actual voice. Thank you. Going to go joy cry some more 🥰

Healing, wisdom, and pleasure 😌😍🙌🏼

Grateful for all the conversations and stories from phenomenal people. AMB’s charisma, facilitation, and embodied wisdom sustains your experience from start to finish. I was left with two key offerings: (1) I must be proactive about my fulfillment and pleasure - AND - of the people and spaces I frequent. It is essential our fulfillment and pleasure is rooted in healing, liberation, and love. (2) Books with multiple community features, songs, poetry, strategies, and invitations are so energizing. This audiobook energized me fully for the journey ahead ✨✨✨

Buy the book not audiobook

This book is likely eye opening for many people. The audiobook, however, was one of the worst designed audiobooks I’ve read. The book contains snippets, essays, interviews. The audiobook is read by one solo voice regardless of the interview etc. It really ruined the whole thing for me. Harder to follow. Flat affect. I really wanted to like this book but I think that would probably be best served with a physical copy and not audio.

Insightful, unapologetic, essential

This book has really opened my eyes to the many ways that we must prioritize pleasure both in our own lives and in our activist movements. If we do not build the world we want to see with these values in mind, we will only recreate sorrow. Especially love all the insight about love, sex, polyamory, drugs, and friendship. Love love love all around!

A religious text for all seeking to change the world from the inside out

Adrienne Marie Brown is a gift to this time- and the wisdom and intelligences shared in these chapters have the potency to change the whole pattern of our cultures between our sheets and in our streets. I love this text and all of her other works. I own the paper copies of each of her published books- but what I love about these audibles is that they are read by the author- and she regularly slips into song as the chapters progress. Please read, share, practice, and live this work. For the sake of all that is good and pleasurable in the world. Let this save us from ourselves. Amen.
