Summary

By the age of 13, vulnerable Sheffield teenager Samantha Owens had fallen through the cracks in the care system. Bounced around numerous foster carers after her home life became too chaotic, Samantha thought she had found a friend in the streetwise Amanda Spencer. The older girl bought her clothes, styled her hair and found her places to stay. Samantha's welfare was the last thing on Spencer's mind, however, as in reality she was grooming the young girl for exploitation of the worst possible kind.

Over the course of the next few months, Samantha was plied with alcohol and drugs and pimped out to over 50 men for Spencer's gain. Raped, abused and with no chance of escape, Samantha was at the mercy of the calculating, ruthless and intimidating Spencer. It took a police investigation of two years to bring her and a small gang of cohorts to justice, and in 2014, Spencer was jailed for 12 years. With her abusers in jail and Samantha bravely rebuilding her life, her shocking story is a stark warning to those who believe child sexual abuse follows any set pattern.

Enjoyed it but it was hard to listen too as a pare

I am a retired London Cop with a lot of experience with child abuse etc. It never ceases to sadden me these type of stories. Why oh Why can parents or others see what's going on eh....

So Glad to hear the outcome. I found this book after reading a BBC News article on the case. Stick with it and then make sure you watch your kids.

This no holds barred account of child abuse survival is both shocking and honest
I cried and smiled and seethed and felt rage
It was a rollercoaster of emotion

A hard book to review

Mixed feelings about this book. Such a sad story about horrendous, disgusting child abuse. Sam obviously had a very disruptive, disfunctional childhood but she did still have choices. I do understand why she kept going back to Amanda as she was her stability, a friend that she needed but she eventually realised what was expected of her and she knew these men were paedophiles so why continue? Also, I question who the victim/s were in the story. Sam wasn't exactly an angel before she met Amanda, smoking weed, shop lifting, not going to school etc and, whilst I emphasise and understand the reasons she was badly behaved (let down my her mother, the care system etc), why is there no explanation or understanding about Amanda's background? It seemed that Sam didn't need very much persuading to go to the parties, even after she knew what she was expected to do there. Why is it that Sam is portrayed as a victim and Amanda as a 'pimp'? She was also a child, what's her background? I'm pretty sure that she had a story /reason she got into prostitution, drugs etc, just as Sam did, she was probably looking for some stability, independence, love too.

I feel for all of the victims in this
story but I do question some of their choices along the way.

Beautifully read tragic story

What a sad story this is. The presentation of the book is beautiful, the reader gives the story to the listener with such real emotion.

I am so sad that your childhood was the way it was and equally delighted for you and your little family that you ended with happiness.

I cried many times listening to this. Thankfully, the last tears I shed for you were happy ones.

Well done on turning your life around.

Sad story

Obviously a very sad story. Found it hard to listen to as didn’t like the narrators voice. Found her childlike impressions OTT and a bit annoying.
