About this listen

The end of the world affords a restless everyman the chance to be a fearless warrior in this exciting apocalyptic adventure filled with magic and monsters.

James Robard was a risk-taking con artist and thief before he turned over a new leaf as a loving husband and a dull suit in a law firm. He's never felt so unadventurous. That is, until the System descends upon Earth and he's initiated into a thrilling game world of magic and mayhem, training for exhilarating challenges that make him feel alive again.

With much of the Earth's population already wiped out, James's first mission is to survive. But the System sees much more in him—like his potential as a warrior. After all, it's judging him by his nefarious past. It knows he'd kill to outlast the dangers ahead and be reunited with his family. In fact, it's counting on it. It seems the System has found its game villain.

Forging a path of escalating stamina, mana, and skills, James is tossed into violent combat with ravenous monsters, treacherous humans, diabolical cults, and gods of less-than-divine intervention. The life-and-death risks and total abandon are giving James a rush. He's been given free rein to be ruthless. But being a pioneer of chaos has its consequences.

Torn between his power-hungry impulses and better instincts, James embarks on a journey of self-discovery through a cataclysmic new realm. And along with a band of fellow survivors, he's about to find out his true purpose in the System's apocalyptic endgame.

The first volume of the hit LitRPG adventure series—with more than 700,000 views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

Absolutely refreshing

It’s so refreshing reading about a black guy, love the representation. I really appreciate the Grandness the story, the stakes are high, the narrator was also very good.

Solid litrpg book

Solid read with a great concept, but it doesn't quite hit the mark. The book starts strong with an intriguing premise and well-written fight scenes that keep you hooked. The narrator does a fantastic job, making the story more engaging.

However, the execution falls short. The leveling system feels meaningless, with levels not adding any real power or significance. The protagonist has too many skills that never get leveled up but are somehow still overpowered. Side characters lack depth and growth, existing only to support the main character without any real exploration of their personalities.

The second half of the book takes a weird turn, losing focus and becoming hard to follow. While it's worth a read if you're into LitRPG books, it's not something I'd revisit. It had potential, but ultimately, it’s just an okay read.

Extremely poorly thought out

This one hurts to write. The author is a solid writer, technically. But he has zero concept of pacing or writing an actual story.

Our intrepid hero is no one special, does nothing special. Yet receives an ability to get basically all the abilities and do everything. He is also fantastic at combat, despite not getting any special ability to be or having any experience which would say he should be.

He's the beez-neez- He's awesome, fantastic, the best ever and has all the skills. Healing? Check. Fire magic? Check. Amazing melee? Well he is a melee class so check. All the skills and his power growth is so rapid, I'm frankly not sure what he's going to be doing in book two. Gardening maybe? I don't know.

Don't waste your time on this one.

Edit: Oh and there's zero ruthlessness in the book. He picks up stray losers all over the place, fights valiantly for the weak, risks his life against evil and the usual. I will never understand why authors insist on doing this. If you want to write a hero, just say so.
