Top of my recommendation list

This book is extremely practical, concise, validating and constructive. It is the first book my husband has ever agreed to read and appreciated as useful. It will complement anyone learning DBT skills for themselves or the family, as the focus is on acceptance while also pursuing changes, validating feelings but not behaviors, and prioritizing connection vs correction or control. I found especially valuable that it actually “goes there” to acknowledge what you are likely feeling and dealing with on serious issues like disordered eating, self harm, delinquency and affects on siblings. A lot of teen emotional dysregulation parenting self help books stop short of giving actual advice when things get real bad, and just say, “go consult a professional.” By articulating so many of the things I see, feel, and think daily, it made me feel seen and helped me believe that I’m not imagining how extreme my kid is, and also, I truly am doing the best I can even while I can improve.
