Summary
Alfie Bell is . . . fine. He's got a six-figure salary, a penthouse in Canary Wharf, the car he swore he'd buy when he was 18, and a bunch of fancy London friends.
It's rough, though, going back to South Shields now that they all know he's a fully paid-up pansy. It's the last place he's expecting to pull. But Fen's gorgeous, with his pink-tipped hair and hipster glasses, full of the sort of courage Alfie's never had. It should be a one-night thing, but Alfie hasn't met anyone like Fen before.
Except he has. At school, when Alfie was everything he was supposed to be, and Fen was the stubborn little gay boy who wouldn't keep his head down. And now it's a proper mess: Fen might have slept with Alfie, but he'll probably never forgive him, and Fen's got all this other stuff going on anyway, with his mam and her flower shop and the life he left down south.
Alfie just wants to make it right. But how can he, when all they've got in common is the nowhere town they both ran away from.

Listend to a story I read before
I knew this one and decided to buy the audiobook. Again I finish feeling content but convinced to never pick it up again.

Didn’t want it to end
Alfie Bell finds himself in his home town catching up with his northern roots. He’s avoided this home coming for years as he feels like a square peg in a round whole since coming out to his family. Visiting for his best friends wedding brings everything in sharp focus. I can’t praise this story enough I love Alexis Hall’s writing skills but he has excelled himself here. The descriptions are are a work of art. I’m going to have to listen to this again soon to catch any details I may have missed. Cornell Collins is perfect I love his characterisation a joy to listen to. Thanks Alexis

Good book
I enjoyed listening to this a lot. By the end I wasn’t as swept away as I have been by other Alexis Hall books which is why I gave four stars, but it’s still good. The narrator’s voice was lovely, but the times when he did accents were a bit cringe worthy - fortunately most of the time he didn’t have an accent. He morphed from Geordie accent to Yorkshire and back again. His voice is great to listen to otherwise, though.

An enjoyable read
I enjoyed this book. The characters were so different to each other but somehow they worked. I felt that this book echoed a lot of the themes in glitterland so I would have liked something more different. An enjoyable read, however,

A Geordie romance
Why bother with an exotic location for your queer romance when South Shields in the NE of England works perfectly well? I love the way Alexis Hall sees beyond the surface drabness of a run-down coastal town to find so many points of character, fascination, and natural beauty. And surely it's important some queer tales take place in forgotten geographic corners. Not everyone lives in London, Manchester, or Brighton.
This story showcases the author's ability to write humour, pathos, sexiness, and descriptive flights of fancy. Both lead characters are believable, ranging far beyond those who populate many queer romances. And they're both lovable, in their very different ways. Fen's confidence in who he is baffles Alfie. Alfie's acquired metropolitan disdain for this bleakly beautiful part of world irritates Fen. Their journey is long but also engaging on many levels. One to re-read.
The narrator does an excellent job, Geordie accents and all.

Great and I learnt a new word
I expected this to be pants but it was just what I needed - a proper feel good story. I pocketed a new recipe for lasagne and l now have a very useful word, doylem. As in don’t be a doylem. Cornell Colin’s was superb as usual.

Too much gender identity rubbish!
Struggled to finish....
Too much gender identity rubbish!. spoiled the story.
I could suspend disbelief for the victim sleeping with bully.... . As a victim I know I would NEVER do that, nor forgive.... but the constant whining about gender ruined any enjoyment.
I do enjoy Cornell Collins narration.

Sweet but weak plot
I really enjoyed the first quater of the audiobook when thinks were all funn and banter. However, the later parts missed a story around the romantic drama. If you want a plot building tension through other means than simple missunderstandings, this book might not be a good match.
Cornell Collins was, as always, a pleasure to listen to.
