About this listen

A man is dead.

The killer is a woman.

But what secrets lie beneath the surface - so dark that a man has to die?

Women are rarely cold-blooded killers. But when famous philanthropist Hugo Fletcher is found dead, there is no doubt in anybody's mind that the killer is a woman. And it is clear from the precision of the planning that this was no crime of passion. It was an execution.

The victim was revered the world over for his charitable work with trafficked Eastern European prostitutes, and as at least one of these girls is missing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is certain that there has to be a connection.

But nothing is as it appears on the surface. A web of complex relationships is gradually revealed and it seems that everybody has something to hide. As each horrific secret is exposed, Tom Douglas begins to realise that this is much more than a simple murder case. And he has a terrible dilemma to face - whether to punish the guilty, or protect the innocent.

Enjoyable enough, Narrator over ‘acts’ a lot which is very annoying and when narrating the letters makes Laura sound like a rather simple and overly naive adolescent.

Narrator very irritating

Too much back story and not enough action or procedure for me. I love this narrator though and chose this book because I was looking for another one of hers after Jan Cramer destroyed the last in the series of another author's crime collection.

A bit tedious at first

Really enjoyed my first book in this series and will definitely read more of them

Excellent

I liked the way the story developed and the realism of the main characters. Excellent

Great read

Very long narrative at a seemingly snails pace at times. The quality of the writing was good and the plot ok but it took forever to reach its conclusion.
The narrator tried her utmost to keep us invested in the characters, however, even she couldn’t avoid the dying embers of empathy and lack of genuine interest in the final outcome.

I have listened to all but 3 of the books in the DI Tom Douglas series and ironically, book 1, where the stories began, was on that list! When I saw it in the £3 sale I had to snap it up.
Only the Innocent is quite unique compared to the other books in the series. I'm used to hearing Lisa Coleman narrate the books and although this narrator did a great job, it just didn't feel like a Tom Douglas book without Lisa's voice telling the story and also, the style of writing feels a little different too.
I did however still thoroughly enjoy the story and was gripped from the beginning. The story is interesting, cleverly plotted and well researched but I must warn others that there could be triggers here for anyone who has suffered domestic or sexual abuse of any kind.
If these trigger warnings do not apply to you, I'd just say be prepared for a few parts of the book to be quite dark but they are handled sensitively and do not in anyway promote abuse of any kind.
So glad I now know how the Tom Douglas books started and I'm looking forward to listening to the final 2 books that I need to listen to in order to complete the series.

INTRIGUING BUT AT TIMES QUITE DARK

Absolutely brilliant book I could not understand why I seen a 1 star review, I’m so so sooooooo glad I ignored that review and gave this a chance and yes this book is fantastic. I enjoyed everything about this, I couldn’t wait to get home get everything done and relax with headphones on into the world of this mystery.

Absolutely brilliant

First couple of chapters were ok, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did but soon I was hooked. Much more than a marriage with secrets, murder & history. I liked that there were lots of threads & characters to unravel. Would definitely recommend & will be buying the next book in the series.
.

Excellent! Best book I’ve read in ages

Really entertaining title but very hard to read. I understand the main character is being manipulated but she's written in an almost willfully ignorant style, it's just not believable. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Really good but...
