Summary

The scorching new thriller from the Sunday Times best-selling author of The Castaways

ONE IS A LIAR.
ONE IS A STRANGER.
ONE IS A CHEATER.
WHO IS A KILLER?

We were dying for a holiday....

The six of us arrived on that beautiful Greek island dreaming of sun-drenched beaches and blood orange sunsets, ready to lose ourselves in the wild freedom of a weekend away with friends.

On the first night we swam under a blanket of stars.

On the second night the games began on our clifftop terrace.

On the third night the idyll cracked, secrets and lies whispering on the breeze.

And by the final night there was a body on the rocks below....

Who would kill for it?

Critic reviews

"Lucy Clarke goes from strength to strength; this utterly addictive trouble-in-paradise novel is her best yet. The plot shifts like sand beneath the reader’s feet." (Erin Kelly)

"I’m breathless; I raced through the last third hardly coming up for air. Talk about twists and turns.... This is going to blow everyone’s socks off!" (Emma Stonex)

"I loved One of the Girls: beautiful writing, suffused with menace, complicated female heroines and an ending I couldn’t predict." (Gillian Mcallister)

Not as good as I had hoped, given the setting

I had high hopes for this, I loved Lucky Clarke's Big Blue (now ret-itiled I think) and find most of her books entertaining though I think I did return one or two along the way as weaker than the rest.
I love destination thrillers especially with sand, sea and luxury locations. I adore the Greek Islands so I thought this would be a winner - and yes I did finish it though I missed a chunk and could not be bothered to go back to find out what I missed which speaks volumes really.
I thought it was well written, did not really make enough of the setting in my opinion, but it was the people I found really wanting.
Lexie was likeable but not really enough to get your teeth into and seemed there for window dressing with an unlikely family backstory.
The rest of them seemed very dull apart from Bella who was a strange mash of of personalities and it just did not seem to ring true as she was asked to perform too many roles.
I also caught a whiff of a politically correct formula being introduced with Ana from Brixton and an all girl couple trying to tick all the boxes and all feeling rather forced.
My main issue however is with the idea that a house which has been on the market for so long and has a history of danger was not brough up to spec with the simplest of compliance to health and safety regulations let alone common sense.
So yes I listened, yes it well tidily written without gaping plot holes, I don't wish I had never read it just all was rather insipid and feel I could have been reading a murder mystery thriller which really knocked my socks off and had me longing to find out what happened next.
To tell you the truth it was a fairly dull Hen break with uninspiring people and that was the real problem - had you been there or read the account it was all a bit lacklustre.
It was a nice idea, an exciting location but characters, lack of capturing the magic of Greece and the scattered and inconsequential plot twists and backstories had me yawning and thinking "So what?"
In fact it could have made a quite good short story, just not enough meat on the bones or pizazz to make a good thriller.
PS .... just started SUN DAMAGE by Sabine Durrant - OMG first five minutes a million times more thrilling than this entire book, also location thriller - seems amazing and am intrigued, excited and captivated after first 15 minutes. beautiful narration - wow - can't wait to get back to it!

Big Little Lies?

Not sure which book was written (plagiarised) first, but the plot is almost identical!

A story of 6 woman in a hen/bachelorette holiday in Greece. Lexi who will be getting married to ED, surprisingly while on hen do Ed notice something or someone with them . A secret .

. The story is very long for what could be 60 chapters, but it gotten be bored up until to the last chapter (100). Contains of more physiological drama than thriller. It’s a surprisingly contain of lgbtq story aswell .

Gripping… Had me from start to finish

Purchased this after loving one of Lucy Clarke’s other books ‘Castaways’. This did not disappoint at all. Had me gripped from the start and did not let up at all. Highly recommend as a summer read/listen. Enjoy

Story is copied from Big Little Lies

This book had several different storylines, but one of them (and the main twist) was copied exactly from Big Little Lies. And it was completely unnecessary as the other threads of the plots were good! It would have been a decent summer holiday thriller but this ruined it for me, plagiarism as close as this is unforgivable.

Another Lucy Clarke special

As with all of her novels this one didn’t disappoint. It had everything, kept me on my toes making sure I didn’t miss a moment. Often with Audible I get distracted, not with this one! Each and every character brings the story to life. I wondered initially if I’d ever remember who was who, but no danger of mixing them up, you get to know each of them with perfect timing. Highly recommend - sit back and enjoy!

Good book

Really enjoyed this. Lots of characters so it takes a while to figure out who is who, there is some anomalies in the story which would be ignored by non-nursing people. But it spoiled the story for me. Yes authors can use poetic license but one story line relied on one fact that would never happen. Unless the author had taken that into account and commented on it in the storyline.
There was a lot of references to bougainvillea also, which is noticeable in an audiobook. A few too many coincidences for a small group of women too. I won’t go into detail as it’ll give the plot away.
Despite those things, I loved the characters and the storylines behind the women and the best ending. I binge listened too as I couldn’t put it down.
