Summary
The classic tale in 3D, like you’ve never heard it before.
An Audible Original adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, executive produced by Academy-Award winning director Sam Mendes, with an original score by The Feeling’s Dan Gillespie Sells (Everyone’s Taking About Jamie), and with an all-star cast including Brian Cox (Succession) as Fagin, Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) as Bill Sikes, Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton) as Nancy, Adeel Akhtar (Four Lions) as Mr Bumble, Lucian Msamati (Gangs of London) as Mr Brownlow, Paapa Essiedu (The Lazarus Project) as Toby Crackit, Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Noah Claypole, Diane Morgan (Philomena Cunk) as Mrs Mann, Julia Davis (Nighty Night) as Mrs Sowerberry, Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso) as Mr Sowerberry and Patricia Allison (Sex Education) as Rose Maylie. And introducing Emilio Villa Muhammad as Oliver Twist and Elijah Wolf as the Artful Dodger.
Orphaned at birth, Oliver Twist is born into the grimmest of 19th century English workhouses with a life of grinding poverty ahead of him. But the boy is a fighter and after being evicted from the workhouse for asking for 'more' and surviving a stint as an undertaker’s assistant, he walks many miles to London and finds a whole new life with a gang of young pickpockets led by the Artful Dodger and their guardian Fagin.
Oliver’s adventures are only beginning as he finds his way into the home of wealthy Mr. Brownlow. Even there he is not safe, for Fagin and his even more dangerous colleague, the thief Bill Sikes, seek to snatch him back and lead him deeper into a life of crime. Only Nancy, Bill Sikes’ girlfriend, can ensure Oliver’s future safety, even if that puts her own life at risk. Full of twists and turns, the story moves towards a dramatic climax when murder prompts a manhunt and a final confrontation with the forces threatening Oliver’s future.
So put your headphones on, sit back and listen as this 19th century classic is brought to the most vivid, cinematic life in an epic, immersive audio drama.
Also starring: Josephine Arden, Rachel Atkins, Annette Badland, Saffron Coomber, Jason Forbes, Pete Gold, Gerard McDermott, Lizzie Waterworth, David Holt, Harry Myers, Alistair Nwachukwu, Amaka Okafor, Stellan Powell, Richard Reed, Garry Robson, Lizzie Stables, Sam Stafford, Mark Straker, Harry Tuffin, Ben Whitehead, Elijah Wolf, Sarah Whitehouse.

55 times
Yes reader, 55 times I've written this review out and 55 times it's been removed for it to be randomly replaced by previous versions with lower helpfuls to try and remove it from the top spot (just as a hint it should have 63 helpfuls) but Amazon can't have that, I mean having you ask for MORE in the way of truth on a project that failed in every way imaginable, that's beyond the pale.
Because nothing works in this, from acting with people who either are just starting out or can't act worth a hill of beans - to editors who don't know how to layer sound properly and have music overlap with voices or voices overlap each other or have some people sitting in wind tunnels and have echoing going on and on all over around the place without an end.
Nothing works, it's a travesty that this has been produced and released via our payments to Amazon, It's even worse that the staff of Amazon seem to think its okay to silence people and remove all negative reviews - seriously, there used to be over 100 negative reviews for this like mine and they've disappeared, I'm the only one who will not let it go because I don't appreciate Dickens being ruined by hacks who don't deserve to be close to such a classic - because then it seems like they're saying we'll take whatever trash they give up regardless of its quality.
But with how Amazon treats its products, can you really say that's not how they're acting?
And yes, I'll keep doing this endlessly Amazon, I'm not breaking the rules but you most definitely are.

No, absolutely not cool
This book has a lot of soul, character and history, to be stepped off like that to its bare dialog (the actors have done a wonderful job of it, but still) .. It's like reading movie subtitles without watching the movie itself. This is just wrong. Anyone who haven't read the actual book, you can find an excellent audio edition here on Audible, don't waist your time with this.. "theater".

Incredible
This is the most immersive and engaging version ever crafted. It is superbly acted throughout and with its 3D audio production brings Victorian England stunningly to life, an astounding audio feast for the ears, especially when listened to on headphones.

Gripping! Brilliant!
Brilliant casting has resulted in characterisations that are wonderful and contribute to the creation of a plausible story.
The background sounds and music are entirely appropriate to the story.

Some recording issues
The actor playing Oliver sounds as though he is auditioning. His reactions are awful and indicate that he has not been recorded in the same place as the other actors. Lockdown remote voice work ?
In the endless pursuit of inclusion and diversity Mendes has weakened the most crucial aspect of the story.

Liked it, didn't love it
It's sort of a jazzed up radio play of Oliver Twist. I like multiple voice audiobooks, but this was a bit over-produced. The music featured a strange bass line. There were some interesting audio separation effects, but they didn't contribute much. If you want some good Dickens, I much preferred Richard Armitage's reading of David Copperfield, also on Audible.

Very Movie-Like!
The voice acting was so good! The sound effects of the changing and bustle of the towns and townspeople added to the experience. I could see these actors as if they were in the movie! Great work, Emilio!
