Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Drifters in search of work, George and simple-minded friend Lennie have nothing in the world except each other - and a dream. A dream that one day they will have some land of their own. Eventually they find work on a ranch, but their hopes are doomed as Lennie - struggling against extreme cruelty, misunderstanding and jealousy - becomes a victim of his own strength.

Tackling universal themes, friendship and a shared vision, and giving a voice to America's lonely and dispossessed, Of Mice and Men remains Steinbeck's most popular work.

Excellent

This is a great, well performed version of this book. The actor who reads it is just right and delivers the book perfectly. It’s a great book anyway but I can’t honestly say this is my favourite audiobook I’ve ever listened to in terms of the delivery and reading of the book. Highly recommend

heartbreaking and haunting

I've heard the title of this book many many times and knew it to be a classic. I also had no idea what it was about but downloaded it to listen to on my commute to work.

The book is short, but impactful. dream vs reality.

there are so many dreams in this book

lenny with his rabbits and his farm, candy and his land and his sense of purpose, curlys wife and her desire for attention, praise and stardom, etc. but all of these dreams are undercut by a cold and unforgiving reality.

somehow the author set the tone that none of these dreams would ever come to fruition. I hoped for it for them, because I empathised with the characters, loved them and wanted their lot to improve but knew deep down it wouldn't.

lenny was just a big, lumbering, misunderstood sweetheart and George his weary keeper. they're the duo you root for but their story could not last and their ending was foreshadowed by the euthanization of candy's shepherd dog.

this book explores the use of hope as a means of perseverance, delusion, dissappointment, hopelessness and death.

I like to think of it as everyone being stuck down a deep hole and no matter how much they struggle and strive, they just can't climb their way out.

what a story

what a story.. a love story.. a story about hope.. the human condition..they had no chance, because of elements in the personality.. life is so hard if you are very poor..the dream shatters.. certainly worth reading and listening.. it will stay with me

Short & Great

Having just watched the movie Ice Road my first thought was well well well, its amazing how much content hangs off the classics.
Really enjoyed this short great and sad story.
Nicely read too, just enough accent.

Riveting and emotionally immersive

I didn't study this at school and didn't think I'd missed much from not having read such a classic, but oh my goodness, I understand why it's such an iconic piece of English literature.

The narrative voice and delivery was perfect! I struggle with narrators as they can sometimes upset the tone and monotonous ly deplete the storyline but this narrator neither distracted nor diminished the effect, he delivered it with all the rawness it needed. His particular portrayal of Lennie stood out.

Thoroughly enjoyed this!!

A true classic

So many layers in this riveting listen and well narrated too. Well defined characters, you know exactly where you are with them.
