Summary
England, 1924. Lady Adelaide Compton has recently (and satisfactorily) interred her husband, Major Rupert Charles Cressleigh Compton, hero of the Somme, in the family vault in the village churchyard.
Rupert died by smashing his Hispano-Suiza on a Cotswold country road while carrying a French mademoiselle in the passenger seat. With the house now Addie's, needed improvements in hand, and a weekend house party underway, how inconvenient of Rupert to turn up - not in the flesh, but as a spirit! Rupert has to perform a few good deeds before becoming welcomed to heaven - or, more likely, Addie thinks, to hell.
Before Addie can convince herself she hasn’t completely lost her mind, a murder disrupts her careful seating arrangement. Which of her 12 houseguests is a killer? Her mother, the formidable Dowager Marchioness of Broughton? Her sister, Cecilia, the born-again vegetarian? Her childhood friend and potential lover, Lord Lucas Waring? One of the others? Rupert has a solid alibi as a ghost and now an urge to investigate.
Enter Inspector Devenand Hunter from the Yard, an Anglo-Indian who is not going to let some barmy society beauty, witnessed talking to herself, derail his investigation. Something very peculiar is afoot at Compton Court, and he's going to get to the bottom of it - or go as mad as its mistress trying.

Good plot but terrible narrator
I enjoyed this story very much but as an audiobook the poor narration kept on throwing me out. The gabbling pace and repeat mispronunciations threw me out of the plot multiple times. It’s a shame but I’d read the book in preference. If you like this style try the Ashley Weavers instead.

Great fun !!
Such a lot of really funny episodes and a good story line. The ghost almost stopped me ordering this book but it's been a great light listen. Am going to start the next in the series and hope the main characters, including the ghost returns.

Loved it!
'Nobody's Sweetheart Now' by Maggie Robinson
Genre: Cosy Murder Mystery
About the book: Set in the 1920's, Lady Adelaide Compton has recently become a widow. She now owns the entire estate, she starts to renovate and organises a party at her home. Yet, she starts to think she is going crazy when she sees her husband again and two murders occur at her party.
My Review: Highly entertaining! I was hooked from the start, always wanting to know more about the mystery. The protagonist (Lady A) is very likable; caring, confident, elegant and somewhat snooty. This is a novel with a powerful female lead throughout. Her 'dead' husband is the sort of character you love to hate. Maggie has done an excellent job of making him a charmer with a womanising past.
I definitely felt I was in the 1920's. The author painted the picture brilliantly and showed the major divide in the social classes.
There is a great balance of show and tell. There is no over description, which makes the pace great.
I could not always tell between dialogue and internal thought. In addition I could not always keep up with the amount of characters.
Triggers - Murder and Martial affairs.
This is a great easy read and I am looking forward to reading all the Lady Adelaide series. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys cosy Murder Mysterious.

Light Hearted
Easy on the ear, you know who did it, early on. Only draw back those irritating wrong things for that era, like pumps instead of shoes/flats, thank goodness at least this writer hadn't put a sink instead if a basin in a bathroom of lavatory. The mispronounced Cannes which she pronounced Carne and Perchant she pronounced Pension.

A touch of gentility
Agatha v Randall and Hopkirk, so refreshing and a lovely story mixed with murder suspense and intrigue. Thoroughly modern thinking in a time of post war frivolity.

Nobody's Sweetheart Now
This is a fun little murder mystery, with the ghost of her dead husband coming back to assist, even help her as she struggles with the detective to solve the two murders. Read well be Gamma Dawson.

Great Story, Terrible Narration
I have listened to two of these books now and will listen to the third as the stories are cosily great but the narration is awful. There is inconsistency within the characterisations and some words (not names) are just mis-pronounced.

Easy listen but narration not the best
The story is ok but I'm afraid it suffers from the problem I have seen with other authors from the USA who write historical books based in upper class English houses. The phrase "he was only a few meters away" springs to mind, Yards and feet surely. As for the narration, it seems strange that an actor reads without pausing at such things as full stops. There were times I stopped playback just to give my ears a rest. I even tried playing it at .9 speed but that didn't work.
I will try the next book because I think I am used to the writing and I think I can out these thing to the back of my mind.
