About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The chilling and compulsive new novel from the number one best-selling author.

We are each our own devil, and we make this world our hell.

It's been 17 months since the Bloodsmith butchered his first victim, and Operation Maypole is still no nearer catching him. The media is whipping up a storm and the top brass are demanding results, but the investigation is sinking fast.

Now isn't the time to get distracted with other cases, but Detective Sergeant Lucy McVeigh doesn't have much choice. When Benedict Strachan was just 11, he hunted down and killed a homeless man. No one's ever figured out why Benedict did it, but now, after 16 years, he's back on the streets again—battered, frightened, convinced a shadowy 'They' are out to get him, and begging Lucy for help.

It sounds like paranoia, but what if he's right? What if he really is caught up in something bigger and darker than Lucy's ever dealt with before? What if the Bloodsmith isn't the only monster out there? And what's going to happen when Lucy goes after them?

Heavy going

No one of his best stories. What started as a juice murder ended up as a ghost story.

Massive twist

Started off loving it, I had a bit of a wobble when the 'twist' started to show itself, but that was me. Soon got back into it and I'm looking forward to another story with our three main characters! Very interesting storyline that kept me guessing. Great narration.

uncharacteristic lapse in form

as a diehard Stuart McBride fan this really pains me to say I hated this. it was fine until it swerves off in a bizarre direction and then becomes a dirge.
unusually I didn't finish it as I found I lost interest..
Shame

Not my favourite

I am usually a fan of this author, however I was disappointed in this story as it was unbelievable.

Thoroughly enjoyed

I went into the book with no idea what the story is about. Stuart MacBride has got a way with words. I really enjoyed the book with the massive twist and I wondered about one bit but the twist actually explains it later. The shouting was rather stupid. I think the narrator could've done a better job with the screams and shouts. Glad I bought this book.

Listened with bated breath

Nearly didn't buy it because of a review, but then I would have missed something good. Hope we hear more from Lucy et al.

Outstanding

I was initially disapointed at the narrator, although I do like Cathleen McCarron as a narrator, she does not convey the same volume of humour as do the likes of Angus King and Steve Worsley, but she does an admirable job with this reading, she really does, and this book is every bit what I was hoping for when i discovered that it was not a new Logan story, but a stand alone, it's riveting from word one, do not let these bad reviews dissuade you, they are written by disappointed Logan fans in the main (I too would love another Logan story please) , this book is fabulous, Lucy is fabulous. barking mad (maybe), but don't let that put you off ... this book has a major twist at around 75 % that you may, or may not, have been anticipating, I was, to a certain extent but I missed the true depth of the twist until it punched me in the face. This is not a book to be messed with, you WILL enjoy it if you are a true MacBride fan, that's all I can say really. That and IGNORE the terrible reviews from Logan fans who've not given this a chance.

Scottish dialogue

No doubt the narrator is a great Scot with too broad an accent for my understanding. Some what spoils the flow of the book in trying to understand what has been said. Not the narrator's fault I'm sure I'm just not accustomed to understanding the dialect.

Worth the wait.

If you’re hoping for another Logan McRae, you’re going to be disappointed. But I do recommend sticking with this one, it’s certainly not what I was expecting but thoroughly enjoyable all the same.
