Summary

From the author of the Themis Files and the Take Them to the Stars series comes a new, riveting story of first contact.

What kind of message would you have sent into space?

I wouldn’t have.

Why not?

Because they might hear it, and then they might come.

A mysterious radio signal is picked up from a neighboring star system. A group of experts is brought to the floor of the Grand Canyon to investigate its origin and its meaning as the planet suffers one natural disaster after another. Cut off from the rest of the world, they must question everything, including each other, if they hope to solve the mystery.

What they discover could be the difference between life as we know it—and the end of the world.

An incredible and unexpected listen

Found this by pure accident. A story of a very unusual first contact with something out there in space. A brilliantly well acted and riveting drama with a completely unexpected and "Wow" twist in the tail. Its not often something like this makes me stop, think, sit up and pay attention. I'd been suffering a bad bout of depression when I chose to listen to this, and by the end it had snapped me out and made me look at things so differently. To the author, thank you so much for this. I am looking forward to seeing what else you have written now.

Great listen

Interesting story, well delivered. More of an audio play than a book. Worth a listen

Pure Genius

Well that was sheer brilliance. Who wrote this amazing story? I haven’t been this blown away by a science fiction story since reading NK Jemisin’s Emergency Skin. How do some writers come up with this stuff? It’s inspiration ten fold. Glad I randomly decided to listen to this audio story. I highly recommend.

Just lovely

This audio drama just randomly popped up as a suggestion. I had no expectations whatsoever. Honestly I thought it’d be boring. Oh how wrong I was. A must-listen. Sci-if, romance, drama and comedy all in a 2,5 hour long package. Absolutely lovely ending as well

Slyvain audio books are brilliant - this is no different

I love this style. And I liked this book. I don’t think it was his finest work. No that really was book one of the Themis files. But it was good.

I know all these people!

I addition to making you think, what is so refreshing about this author are his characters. I constantly catch myself thinking "I know this person, this is totally ..." Wish Sylvain Neuvel would write more books, faster. :) The full cast reading adds just that extra bit on top - who needs a netflix series if you have such excellent voice actors reading your work!

The very kindness I needed...

I suppose I should have looked at other reviews before starting to write one, but on the other hand, I'm glad I didn't, in case any of them included a spoiler. I'm 72, retired and disabled, and struggling with my inability to help people the way I used to. Last night that struggle reached a new, terrible threshhold when I learned of a situation in which many, many people are suffering, and it's exactly the kind of thing I spent my career working on. I distracted myself by coming to Audible, and I trust folks will forgive me if I believe some kind of guidance was at work when I chose this story. The ending was totally unexpected, and, as my title says, it was the very kindness I needed. I will be forever grateful to Sylvain Neuvel.

All that said, since I have experienced the occasional favorite book that became an abominable audio book, I want to add that the production work on this was really quite good. I did some readers' theatre when I was in college and it reminded me of the best of those productions. The actors all did a great job with their characters, though once again, the author wrote great characters for them to read! I'll admit that early on, I was less than impressed with the main antagonist, but as the story progressed all the pieces fell into place, and the character had been read exactly right. Anyone who enjoys stories with great surprise endings will, I think, love this one, especially if they are attracted to the Kindness in the title.

Well done

I enjoyed this short story very much. The performances were well acted. The characters rich and well drawn. The science was not beyond my non-science education, but toed enough to commoners experience from movies, tv shows, news stories, other "scify" presentations in popular culture that it was easy to understand. The plot was very thought provoking and had me contemplating in many directions. I truly enjoyed the author's philosophy and presentation!

Original

This is a bizarre and thought-provoking tale about first contact with an alien species and how we might communicate with them. It’s also a story about whether the natural disasters coming like the plagues of Egypt are caused by the aliens. The first half, dealing with theories about what aliens would look like and what would be needed for them and us to understand each other was quite fascinating, almost a science lesson on ETs. The second half of the story is much more bizarre as the scientists focus in on communications fifteen years earlier between a suicidal Australian and the alien species. They begin to postulate that the disasters are a response from the aliens who are learning about the planet from one miserably unhappy person. It’s a fascinating idea with an ending that will give you a smile.

Plot twist!!

More science than science fiction in the beginning, but stick it out! Well worth seeing this thing through to the end. Such a good story, REALLY enjoyed it.

Thought provoking, well written & performed

I freely admit that I got this title from the Audible Plus catalog because it was free. (I overspent my Audible budget this month but I’m addicted.)

I didn’t expect a lot from such a short piece, but wow I am so very pleased with my lucky download. It is tightly written and well performed by all. You don’t need a long recording to pack a punch.

If you like Cosmos or Contact, I’ll bet you will love this novella.
