Summary

Written with a searing honesty and published for the 10th anniversary of Amy Winehouse's death, My Amy is an evocative portrait of unbreakable lifelong friendship - and a devastating study into fame, addiction and self-sabotage.

Only one person knows what really happened to Amy, other than Amy herself. He is Tyler James, Amy’s best friend from the age of 13. They met at stage school as two insecure outsiders, formed an instant connection and lived together from their late teenage years right up until the day she died, aged just 27.

Tyler was there by her side through it all. From their carefree early years touring together to the creation of the multiple Grammy-winning Back to Black, which she wrote on their kitchen floor. From her volatile marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil through her escalating addictions, self-harm and eating disorders as the toxic nature of fame warped Amy’s reality. For the last three years of her life, Tyler was with her every day when she’d beaten drugs and was close to beating alcoholism, too. He also knew better than anyone the real Amy Winehouse who the tabloid-reading public rarely saw - the hilarious, uncompromising force-of-nature busy taking care of everyone else.

We all think we know what happened to Amy Winehouse, but we don’t. This definitive insider’s story tells us all, finally, the truth.

Hard-hitting, honest book with great narration

First, I love it when authors narrate their own books, makes such a difference listening to biographical material from the actual person. Tyler's narration is immediate, engaging and personal. It's quite heartbreaking at the end of the book.
I'm actually more of a fan of Tyler James than Amy Winehouse, from his time on The Voice. I always got a sense that he was quite a traumatised soul but a very kind, generous person - though very little was known about him.
This book confirmed my initial impressions, and answered many old questions I thought I'd never get answers to. This could easily have been a book written objectively about his time with Amy, but instead it's deeply personal, brutally honest, and not very flattering to himself on many occasions.
I thought the writing was excellent, with very good pacing and a good structure, and it never gets boring (though the subject matter is by nature quite harrowing). The vocabulary is well chosen, evocative and never lazy.
I was also impressed that Tyler doesn't do much name-dropping or slagging off of other people. He's just telling his story with as few gratuitous references to others as possible. He's not very judgmental of others, and understandably keeps his remarks to the subject at hand.
I thought there was a good dose of wisdom throughout, really mature and evolved thinking. The book isn't just about Amy, it's also a study of the pitfalls of the music industry and, most of all, addiction.
A brave book.

Filled in the gaps.

Devoured every chapter, after reading, watching every book/programme about Amy, this one I feel has filled in the gaps. Fills me with sadness that she left this world with out the arms of Tyler around her.. but maybe she didn’t want that.
Tyler if you ever get to read this, you done all anyone could do. I’m so pleased she had your love wrapped around her, even if sometimes she was hard to love, I think you made a a huge difference, she was like your addiction.
Sweet dreams beautiful Amy…hope your singing with those that left before you. Always remembered for your incredible intelligence and beautiful voice.

inevitable but tragic

I loved this book.Tyler went through hell himself but still looked after his best friend every day. It shows that drug and alcohol addiction is not a lifestyle choice but an illness. Amy did not have the strength of mind or body to get herself out of this horrendous situation. It did not help that everyone around her was suffering too.
And the people responsible for looking out for her let her down so badly.
The record industry needs to take a long hard look at itself. It's very much got blood on it's hands.

insight on a life from a very different angle

loved it! I've never heard a story like it. I was gripped throughout. He tried everything he could but he was facing his own demons. I felt for both of them throughout. It was raw and emotional, childlike at times. This book left a mark

Heartbreaking

I know this story doesn't have a happy ending but I'm glad I listened to it as it gave me a much greater understanding of Amy's struggles with not only addiction but with fame. I loved Amy's music ever since I bought Frank when it first came out and like Tyler I wish her fame could have stayed at that level. I found the first chapters great but at some point the relentlessness of her and Tyler's addictions as the book goes on very hard to listen to, in the end it was an endurance test for me to finish, but I did and found some comfort in the closing chapter. If you're very sensitive you might also find it hard going and very depressing. But overall I'm glad I read it and to know how much Tyler loved Amy and that he did his best to support her, even when battling his own demons and even when he wasn't really able to he still tried, he never gave up on her. I take from it that they had a true, deep and loving friendship but fame at that level coupled with deep addictions were a battle she couldn't win, she didn't really have the support she needed when she needed it, right at the beginning, as too many people were invested in Amy the product rather than Amy the person. Tyler could never have saved her on his own. Fame is a dirty business at that level and will devour you and Amy was fighting so many demons. Amy was and will always be a devastating loss, she was a true and rare talent. Thank you for sharing your story Tyler and in telling it I hope it helps your healing journey too.
