Summary

Which Victorian murderess inspired Thomas Hardy’s "Tess of the D’Urbevilles"?

Who lived to regret her "deathbed" confession? Was Amelia Dyer mad or wicked? Why did the judiciary look compassionately on women who committed infanticide? Among over 80 women whose stories appear in this book, some were tragic; some were evil; some were mad; and several were undoubtedly innocent of the murders for which they were hanged. While politicians argued about the rights and wrongs of capital punishment, some of these women walked stoically to the gallows; some fainted or screamed in terror at the sight of the noose; and others walked free from the courtroom having ‘got away with murder.

certainly an eye opener!

I found this book fascinating such a good read 📚 though I was surprised at the amount of forensics for such a long time ago...

Very interesting and informative.

I enjoyed this audio. it was well written, although short on the timeline of each story. The reason being no doubt is that the author had to write about so many different crimes committed by different women, etc. I liked the fact that there were many different stories. The narrator's voice was very clear and so easy to listen to. The last story got me going. I'm sure old Mr Fleming was guilty and got away with murder while an innocent girl spent 15 years in prison for a crime she didn't commit.

Terrific read

Great collection of real life cases, grouped nicely by chapters. You really get a flavour of Victorian Britain, particularly the desperation of some young girls with seemingly no options left to them. It does make you appreciate our society and the benefits available.
The narration is perfect for this book.

very boring book

a very interesting subject made into something incredibly boring. Hard to finish this one. little detail given on each crime. where when who and what verdict they were given and then onto next story. no other details given . very poor.
