Summary
The first in an exciting historical mystery series set in the home of Agatha Christie!
Tucked away among Devon's rolling green hills, Mallowan Hall combines the best of English tradition with the modern conveniences of 1930. Housekeeper Phyllida Bright, as efficient as she is personable, manages the large household with an iron fist in her very elegant glove. In one respect, however, Mallowan Hall stands far apart from other picturesque country houses....
The manor is home to archaeologist Max Mallowan and his famous wife, Agatha Christie. Phyllida is both loyal to and protective of the crime writer, who is as much friend as employer. An aficionado of detective fiction, Phyllida has yet to find a gentleman in real life half as fascinating as Mrs Agatha's Belgian hero, Hercule Poirot. But though accustomed to murder and its methods as frequent topics of conversation, Phyllida is unprepared for the sight of a very real, very dead body on the library floor....
A former army nurse, Phyllida reacts with practical common sense - and a great deal of curiosity. It soon becomes clear that the victim arrived at Mallowan Hall under false pretences during a weekend party. Now, Phyllida not only has a houseful of demanding guests on her hands - along with a distracted, anxious staff - but hordes of reporters camping outside. When another dead body is discovered - this time, one of her housemaids - Phyllida decides to follow in M. Poirot's footsteps to determine which of the Mallowans' guests is the killer. With help from the village's handsome physician, Dr Bhatt, Mr Dobble, the butler, along with other household staff, Phyllida assembles the clues. Yet, she is all too aware that the killer must still be close at hand and poised to strike again. And only Phyllida's wits will prevent her own story from coming to an abrupt end....

Interim Review
I'm still listening to this but I'm wondering why on earth the Housekeep would want rye whisky when it was normal for the English to drink single malt. Rye whisky is an American whisky, thus showing that another American author doesn't know how to do research. This error grates on my nerves as it's repeated a lot in the first few chapters and I know it's the WRONG whisky.

An unusual spin on Agatha Christie’s mysteries
It was a compelling intricate and well narrated story, which was spoilt for me by the Americanisms, such as lightning bugs, trash can and automobiles to name a few . It drove me mad I’m afraid. Some words would never have been used in the 1930’s

Good story
Although a good storyline I found myself skipping parts that were a bit long winded. The narrator’s voice was monotonous which didn’t help. Not one of my best listens.

Good story
I loved the idea of the story from the description and it proved to be an entertaining listen once I started. There are a few American terms and phrases that turn up every so often, but this does not detract from the plot. The narration is also very well done.

it was okay
Entertaining enough but peppered with too many Americanisms (trash, gotten, lightning bugs, cup measurements) which grated. As many if the characters complain, it took too long to tell what was a fairly thin story.

Long winded!
Though very well read, from the very beginning it felt like a pot-boiler and my suspicions were very quickly confirmed, though it was free, and so is BBC radio!

Disappointing.
"Murder at Mallowan Hall" is an attempt at a cosy and charming country house mystery, but the author tries too hard to be sleek and funny and, as a result, is neither.

Good Story
A good story when it got going. Some American words crept in, but overall I enjoyed this book. It was an easy listen while doing jobs about the house.

Phyllida Bright is a really cool woman
A murder at Agatha Christie’s mansion? Yes, please!
The book came free with my monthly subscription, so I wasn’t expecting too much, but I ended up really enjoying it, especially because the main character, Phyllida Bright is a very modern and clever woman.
The fact that Agatha Christie it’s only a secondary character makes the plot less predictable.
English is not my first language, so I wasn’t bothered too much by “Americanisms” pointed out by other reviewers, but I truly dislike how the reader did Agatha‘s voice: kind of a whispering soft voice, that personally I do not associate to the great Dame.

acceptable despite Americanisms
unfortunate inclusion of jarring Americanisms (trash cans, gotten, cookies etc) detracted from otherwise acceptable story.
