About this listen

In Jilly Cooper's latest, raciest novel, Rupert Campbell-Black takes centre stage in the cutthroat world of flat racing.

Rupert is consumed by one obsession: that Love Rat, his adored grey horse, be proclaimed champion stallion. He longs to trounce Roberto's Revenge, the stallion owned by his detested rival, Cosmo Rannaldini, which means abandoning his racing empire at Penscombe and his darling wife, Taggie, and chasing winners in the richest races worldwide, from Dubai to Los Angeles to Melbourne.

Luckily the fort at home is held by Rupert's assistant, Gav, a genius with horses, fancied by every stable lass but damaged by alcoholism and a vile wife. When Gala, a grieving but ravishing Zimbabwean widow moves to Penscombe as carer for Rupert's wayward father, it is not just Gav who is attracted to her: a returning Rupert finds himself dangerously tempted.

Gala adores horses, and when she switches to working in the yard, her carer's job is taken by a devastatingly handsome South African man who claims to be gay but seems far keener on caring for the angelic Taggie. And as increasingly sinister acts of sabotage strike at Penscombe, the game of musical loose boxes gathers apace....

A right rollicking story in true Jilly Cooper style... lots of characters to keep up with and the action is fast moving . A little too many corny quips , all rather too obvious, but lovely to catch up with all the old characters... I love how she humanises the horses and dogs...
The narrator is particularly clever to keep up with all the different accents, she keeps it all alive.

Beautifully read ...

A great listen and narrated perfectly for Jilly’s story. Not so keen on other narrators who are a bit annoying but Sian is great. Same Jilly Cooper as always, characters a bit 2 dimensional
And very similar in every story .. no real depth but funny easy to listen to Wasn’t disappointed!! .

Fabulous Jilly Cooper

Classic Campbell-Black, as usual Jilly Cooper does not disappoint! Had me laughing and crying! Only sorry I've come to the end but think I might have to go back and do the whole series again!!

Brilliant!

Utter candyfloss for the ears but it's fun, easygoing escapism with more character depth in the animals than the humans. Not going to win the Noble prize for literature and stretched feasibility by a long chalk but if you're the sort of person who's inner child still screams 'HORSIE!!' every time you see one, you'll enjoy it.

It's got horses in it.

This was classic Jilly Cooper! Great fun and how lovely to be back in Rupert’s world again….

Loved this

Rupert Campbell Black is reaching middle age and is still shocking in every way. He's rude, egotistical and eccentric, but the ladies love him. His dad is ill and the new carer brought in, prefers working with the horses and proves a better fit as Rupert strives to breed the best racehorses in the world.

As with all Cooper novels, there is much randiness throughout the stables and the horsey set. Without spoiling too much, I was annoyed that someone was totally in love, but seemed to have no problem with then chucking that person and moving onto someone else. I suppose that's what the people enjoy though, so have a good listen here.

I am an avid jolly cooper - Rupert Campbell-Black fan and this is the first Audio book I have purchased it let the experience down for me, I found the narrators interpretations of some characters bordering on childlike

A couple of the characters got on my nerves and the ending seemed rushed. One of the main characters in the book 'Gala'. Really got on my nerves as the book progressed.

Great book with all the usual key elements a Jilly Cooper book needs and has.
