Summary
Motherhood is the true hero's journey - which is to say that it can be as harrowing as it is joyful, and enlightening as it is exhausting. For Jungian psychoanalyst Lisa Marchiano, this journey is not just an adventure of diaper bags and parent-teacher conferences, but one of intense self-discovery.
In Motherhood, Marchiano draws from a deep well of Jungian analysis and symbolic research to present a collection of fairytales, myths, and fables that evoke the spiritual arc of raising a child from infancy through adulthood.
Divided into three major segments similar to the stages of a hero's initiatory journey, (Descent, Sojourn, and Return), Motherhood charts how events like pregnancy, the calamities of childhood, and the empty-nest experience are all parts of an odyssey to which every mother receives an invitation. Here, Marchiano emphasizes that when you take up that invitation, it will lead to an adventure into the wild frontier of your own soul. And once you return from this inner journey, you'll possess the treasured knowledge need to clarify your values, embrace your disowned parts, and claim the mantle of motherhood in the full bloom of your empowerment.

Just amazing
So beautiful. Probably the best book I’ve ever read / listened to about self development and spiritual meaning in life. Really the perfect antidote if you have any struggles related to motherhood.

A must-read for every woman - not just mothers.
Jungian analyst Lisa Marchiano explores motherhood, womanhood and femininity through myths, legends, and fairy tales and beautifully illustrates both the sacrifices and gifts of being a woman. My favourite bits were the excellent and extremely helpful journaling prompts at the end of each chapter. I will come back to this book soon.

brilliant listen for mothers
absolutely loved this book! a great, self-reflective read for mothers of children of all ages but particularly helpful for me as a mother of a toddler, just when all my buttons are starting to be pushed. I'm grateful to have these insights in my toolbox! and i loved the fairytales and how applicable they are all to the situations discussed in the book. I've just bought three hard copies to give to friends aa gifts, and will buy more copies come Christmas I'd say! loved it!! thank you Lisa!

yes, yes and yes!
This book has been so validating, so comforting, so understanding...
Relationships with my kids, especially my daughters are here, explained through fairy tales, personal stories, references to the author's clients and Lisa's total honesty... I cannot endorse the content enough. I feel relieved about my mothering for the first time in my life. I had 3 children, all have moved on to their own lives. My 2 daughters have daughters of their own and the book illuminated so much. I did okay!!! I can say that with a smile and true conviction after reading Motherhood.
