Summary

Told in her own words, this is the story of serial killer Aileen Wuornos, who was portrayed in an Oscar-winning performance by Charlize Theron in the film Monster.

There have been few female serial killers, but Aileen Wuornos, who was executed in 2002, was a remarkable example of this rare breed of death-row inmate. All too often, female prostitutes have been the victims of male serial killers - Wuornos’ killings were the inverse of this pattern. After escaping an abusive childhood at the hands of her grandparents, she became a child prostitute, progressing into a disastrous adulthood of prostitution and damaging affairs with both men and women. Her eventual metamorphosis from victim to attacker had brutal consequences: a stream of dead men. This is her story, as told to Christopher Berry-Dee, editor of The New Criminologist and director of Britain's Criminology Research Centre.

An absolute horrific tragedy

The only serial killer I actually feel sorry for.

Not condoning what she did by any stretch but this poor woman got dealt the worst hand from the word go. Life truly failed her and made her who she was and what she went on to do.

This book gets straight into the details of her life and how her life start to finish panned out. Truly awesome book.

Some call her a monster but I prefer to think of her as a tragedy of life. Just shows what your upbringing and life experiences you have can sometimes create monsters.

Her crimes were terrible but at the same time I feel sorry for her

loved this

really addictive and entertaining. to hear it from her point of view etc also is interesting. she never plays the victim despite her claims. perhaps one of the few serial killers that would make you doubt their deadly intent

Very interesting

I loved both Nick Broomfield documentaries but learnt a few new things about Aileen's case from this book, in particular, Richard Mallory. So I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this case. Having said that, the choice of an English, male narrator was a bit strange. Although it was read well, this is the only bit that jarred.

Nothing new really

This book is okay, but nothing special. There is no real delving into the psychology. The narration is fairly deadpan with an irksome repetitive tone.

If you have the chance, watch Nick Broomfield's documentaries instead.
