Summary
London's most notorious gangsters, in their own words . . .
The Sunday Times top 10 best seller.
The Kray twins were Britain's most notorious gangsters. Ruling London's underworld for more than a decade, as gang lords they were among the most powerful and feared men in the city. Photographed by David Bailey and even interviewed for television, they became celebrities in their own right and are infamous to this day.
Ronnie and Reg's reign of terror ended on 8th March 1969 when they were sentenced to life with the recommendation that they serve at least 30 years. Ronnie ended his days in Broadmoor - his raging insanity only controlled by massive doses of drugs. Reg served almost three decades in some of Britain's toughest jails before being released on compassionate grounds in August 2000. He died of cancer eight months later.
Compiled from a series of interviews with Fred Dinenage from behind prison walls, Our Story is the classic account that explodes the myths surrounding the Kray twins. In it, the twins set the record straight. In their own words they tell the full story of their brutal career of crime and their years behind bars. With an introduction from Fred Dinenage, this compelling, disturbing and highly enjoyable book is the definitive story of two legendary criminals.

Nurture or Nature
Listening to this book was a bit of family research for me. My father served 6 months of an 18 month jail sentence, for being the front man for a gangster long firm. He was middle aged and had just left the Priesthood with no knowledge of life as a lay person. The experience broke him and broke my family.
I wanted to hear what the boys had to say. Poor poor little lads they explained their tough childhood and explained away their villainy as being the only option for kids brought up in their circumstances. Neglecting the vast majority of working people from the East End who worked on the Docks, warehouses, market stalls, and generally went out to work to earn an honest crust.
Then follows their version of how they climbed to the top of the London underworld. Personally I see it as a descent into hell. Their descriptions of the murder of rival villains were explained in graphic detail, shooting one cold bloodily in the forehead, and stabbing another in the face and then multiple times in the torso. They both dealt this rough justice because they thought the victims deserved it. One was killed for calling Ronnie a fat Poof, and the other one for slagging of Reggie.
Ron and Reggie dealt death but couldn’t understand why they got life in prison, they feel really hard done by. Reggie I accept there were mitigating circumstances he was criminally insane, but Reggie just completely deluded himself. Looking back on their lives they show no real remorse for the suffering they caused, in fact you can feel their longing for the good old days when they were free to the beat the shit out of anyone who crossed their paths.
London is better off without them, but unfortunately their kind will always be with us. I do feel guilty reading this book because it does idolise them and from the reviews of other readers it is clear a lot of people see Ron And Reggie as modern day Robin Hoods.
This, they are not everything they did was for selfish motives. This book should be read as a lesson. Personally after reading this book, I thought Thank God their but for the grace of God go I, because I too had a wretched childhood like theirs partly because of my Fathers association with the likes of the Krays. This book is a lesson in how not to conduct your life, but I fear many foolish people will see them nostalgically as martyrs of the East End rather than cold blooded ruthless bullies that they were.

Very enjoyable
Even though Reg and Ron both say this is Our story, it isn't 100% the truth.
The book was written at a time when both twins wanted to be released from prison and took this opportunity to paint themselves in a good light as truly reformed characters.
So they wouldn't really say much that would get them in more trouble like what really happened to Frank Mitchell.
Its a very well written book and a great listen.

Honest
Illuminating though shows how far from reality their views were. They played the system and were ultimately undone by it
