Summary
Berlin Detective Bernie Gunther bows out at last in the 14th and final book of the Sunday Times and New York Times best-selling series. With an introduction by Ian Rankin.
Berlin, 1928, the height of the Weimar Republic. Bernie is a young detective working in Vice when he asked to investigate the Silesian Station killings: four prostitutes murdered in as many weeks, and in the same gruesome manner.
Bernie hardly has time to acquaint himself with the case files before another murder occurs. Until now, no one has shown much interest in these victims—there are plenty in Berlin who'd like the streets washed clean of such degenerates. But this time, the girl's father runs Berlin's foremost criminal ring, and he's prepared to go to extreme lengths to find his daughter's killer.
It seems that someone is determined to rid Berlin of anyone less than perfect. The voice of Nazism is becoming a roar that threatens to drown out all others. But not Bernie Gunther's....

The End Of Bernie Gunther?
Philip Kerr's character Bernie Gunther ends his tales in this story taking himse back to his younger days.
In his last novel we reached Bernie in the late 1950's, a grizzly older man with no doubt a liver condition.
It would be amazing if someone picked up the story from the late 1950's or even early 1960's and gave Bernie a better ending to his career.
Personally I always wanted him to retire somewhere, with a lady, writing his biography.
His life has been full of crime, war and some horror.... He wasn't a particularly good man either but that was through circumstance.
I hope one day, someone, will pick up the pen and give Bernie the end I am sure Philip Kerr might have envisaged.
