Summary

The city of the gods. Elantris once stood as the symbol of all that is beautiful. A sprawling metropolis of unrivaled grandeur, it was a symbol of power and strength, built to be as imposing as it was magnificent.

The only thing more glorious than the city itself was its inhabitants, godlike beings, with silvery skin and hair of the purest, flowing white. Able to create powerful magics with a mere wave of their hands, the Elantrians were able to heal mortal wounds and create any object they desired. To be an Elantrian was to be without sickness, without pain, and without want.

And anyone could become a god. Through a process known as the "Shaod", a normal person could go to bed one night and awake the next morning to throw away the shackles of mortality and become a being of incomparable power and grace. With Elantris as their beacon, the light inside all humanity was allowed to shine, elevating it to new heights.

But Elantris fell...10 years ago.

Decent adaptation let down a bit

I really enjoy the Graphic Audio library of stories and am honestly surprised at how well this was done, it's the first of the Cosmere stories done by GA and they did a decent job in doing the story, the people are believable, the music and effects well done and the final putting together nearly all perfect.

There's just 2 things that I have a small issue with.

1. is the pronunciations in the story, we had several instances where the narrator would say a word while narrating, have a character say the same word and then immediately after have the narrator back with the same pronunciation. Clearly someone on-staff corrected him and they didn't rerecord that earlier scene for the sake of speed.

2. In a few sections there's parts that aren't given much detail or shown, for instance the iconic "I failed, I failed my love." words are there - barely heard over narration and character dialogue that should have been equalised a little better, to give that scene more gravitas compared to what we had.

Oh and it doesn't have the Ars Arcanum or the coda with Hoid (said wrong and annoyed me immensely) and those are let downs for me.

Aside from those small gripes, it's a decent book and a decent rendition, all round good in my view if you can take the small problems.

Great concept, but poor audio mix let's it down!

I love the idea of this, and there is definitely something in this concept that could be great!
I was excited to experience a new version of Elantris.

Unfortunately, the audio is mixed so poorly that's it's basically unlistenable.
The background sounds are so loud that often the character voices are very difficult to hear.
A real shame as, the voice actors seem very good.

I ended up switching back to the regular audio book instead.

Too much going on

Whilst the book is fantastic, I struggled with the use of sound effects and music which constantly threatened to drown out the narrator. The premise is fun, because I like to combine music and reading but in this case it failed to work for me. Certainly try it and see how it fits.

This audio book wasn’t for me.

No disrespect to other listeners who gave it top marks,, but for me,the sound effects were far too loud along with the music. About 18 hours of loud music, I got a banging head ache trying to get through it.it took me a while trying to get into it, even when the main narrator was talking there was music in the background.
I think it would have been a cracking book to listen to without the background distractions .

Brilliant performance and story

The story needs no review, it's Brandon's debut work so he hasn't quite mastered his craft yet.
The recording is exceptional and everyone involved should be proud. The audio design is clearly over-compressed like many modern designs, which is what people are complaining about when they say they "can't hear the words" but as long as you listen with headphones it's fine.

Good read!

Loved it! I've read almost all of his older work, but I found this one just as good. Im hoping for more books about the world and the magic of Elantrians!

Brilliant performance from the cast

I’ve always liked graphic audio as their productions are outstanding. This did not disappoint. Brilliant story from Brandon Sanderson and I enjoyed thoroughly. It’s a great introduction to the Cosmere and it only gets better from here.

An epic fantasy romp!

My first Sanderson novel. Fun high fantasy epic. Great world building. Enjoyable narrative, more twists than I imagined, but some elements of the ending were telegraphed. Superb performances, music & sfx made for a great recording!

The weakest entry in the cosmere

I liked the graphic audio performances. But after having read mistborn, stormlight and warbreaker beforehand I was a bit disappointed overall.

Too mutch noise

The story is spot on! Sanderson as always kills delivering it, but all the sound effects for various times make it hard for me to understand the righting. If the tuned down 50% it would have improved greatly it all

the story is incredible. but you can't hear it.

the "dramatization" ruins the entire thing. the naration voice is super quiet and any time background effects playing you can't hear the story. it's super frustrating.

Enjoyable way to hear the story

The story itself is not the best work by Brandon Sanderson but is still well done. This is especially true when taking into account that this is his first published novel. The magic system and description of the process of using magic was probably the best part. Some of the characters are simplistic, but charming in a fairy tale archetype sort of way.

The production reminds me of watching television as a child. It can be corny and over the top, but the actors embody the characters. Some of the chosen voices can be grating or overdone, but that is part of the fun. It did influence my view and thoughts on characters at times. Probably not the most pure way to absorb the material. The shorter length of the production compared to the regular audiobook was also a plus for me. From what I have read sentence filler is mostly cut out.

Overall I enjoyed this way of hearing the story, and will be listening to Warbreaker next!

PS - Cosmere completists, there is a scene featuring a familiar character at the end of the 10th anniversary edition that is not included in this version. I ended up reading it separately.

Almost flawless, but the flaws are aggravating

The vocal performances were excellent. Everyone's character sounded as they should. It's two major flaws where that the background sound effects and music would occasionally drown out the dialogue or narration, and many of the names were mispronounced.

LOVED!!!

I’ve never heard a dramatized book before it is SO cool. I didn’t want to stop listening! Really is a movie in your mind. Brandon Sanderson is One of my new favorite of all time authors. If not my favorite. Every book I’ve listened to by him so far is a can’t put down winner.

Audio mastering not good

The story and actor performances seem great, but there are too many times I can't tell what they're saying over the sound effects.

Great in theory, bad in practice

The book is great, but the dramatization of a boom just makes it more confusing and harder to listen to. I usually listen to books at a faster than 1 pace and it is impossible with this style. I tried to listen at normal speed and the background noises and constant changes in voices made it difficult to listen

Fantastic adaptation

I thought this was a fantastic adaptation. The performances were a bit over the top, but I think it only added to the charm. It’s needed for an audio only format like this.

Great way to "read" Brandon Sanderson

I love Brandon Sanderson's books! The one complaint I have is that his books are SOO long. This was a great way to hear the story and still get tasks of daily living accomplished.
