Summary

As far back as he can remember James Corden has only ever wanted to be in one place: in front of you, doing something to make you laugh, cry, shout, or giggle uncontrollably. At the age of 4, he grandstanded throughout his baby sister’s christening, standing on a chair in front of the whole congregation, pulling faces and cracking everyone up. Despite himself, the vicar was impressed. And from then on he couldn’t get enough of the spotlight, even when it always seemed to avoid him. Throughout his teens, he and his Dad trudged up and down towards London, getting closer and closer to landing a gig, only to be told ‘No’ at the last stage. But he never gave up and soon found his whole life turned upside down and inside out by his experience as one Alan Bennett’s History Boys. From that moment forth, he’s never looked back.

May I Have Your Attention Please? is the warm, cheeky, surprisingly honest and hilarious story of one of our most popular comedy talents. From his antics as one of the founding players of his high-school’s first ever rugby team to gaining recognition in the West End, to nationwide fame as the loveably loud Smithy in the award-winning Gavin and Stacey, this is a tenderly told story of what it’s like to try, try and try again and - happily - get there in the end.

I loved this

I thoroughly enjoyed James Corden's autobiography from start to finish. I had no idea just how much acting work he had done pre-Gavin and Stacey fame or how many influential people he had worked alongside. It was well read, engaging and entertaining.

Very Interesting although sometimes Monotonous

I really enjoyed this book and I really didn't mind the name drops as mentioned in other previous reviews. Partly these name drops and anecdotes are why I get these books in the first place.

I particularly found the section on his work with the History Boys very entertaining as I didn't know a lot about this before and as someone who studied drama, backstage show stories are always fun.

My only criticism would be is that sometimes James doesn't put too much emotion in while reading and so it is obvious that he is reading rather than more of a stream of concious. I'm comparing this to Eddie Izzard's performance of his book and also Mat Lucas.

However, overall, this was a great book and one that I may listen to again one day.

Sublime

I admit I write this from a biased point of view, but it really is very good.

I realise that I’m also late to the party audiobook wise.

This really is very good though. The story takes you, chronologically, through his life up to 2011 (publishing date), taking you through the weird stage of fame he went through that obviously took its toll. It’s weird listening to the book now, because things that he wanted to do as he wrote it and achievements he’s wanted to make, he has done; so reading it now has a sense of dramatic irony to it!

Cordons reading of it is great and really engaging. I sincerely hope that, now 8 years later, he feels compelled to write another autobiography/memoir in the future.
