About this listen

Kate Blackwell is the symbol of success — a beautiful woman who parlayed her inheritance into an international conglomerate. Winner of a unique position among the wealthy and world-renowned, she is also a survivor as indomitable as her father, who returned from the edge of death to wrench a fortune in diamonds from the hard South African soil. As she celebrates her 90th birthday, Kate surveys the family she has manipulated, dominated, and loved over the decades and asks herself: Is she the master of the game?

Story good, narrator awful

Read the book before and enjoyed it. However the narrator on the audio version had a very droning voice and her pronunciation of some words sounded like a computer programme. Really spoilt what should’ve been an interesting storyline.

Enjoyed the story

What a pity the great story line was rushed through by the narrator. The speed was so fast I had trouble concentrating.
By far the best narrator in The Sidney Sheldon books I’ve listened to so far is Lorelei King. I could listen to her all day and will actually buy the books she’s narrating for that reason.

Beautiful

I wish Sidney had killed off characters like Eve. Justice should have be served but it was not.

Terrific story. Awful narrator.

The story line is fast moving & very interesting. However, this has to be the worst narrative I have ever listened to. There are pauses in all the wrong places & this took a while to get used to. Nothing wrong with the readers voice just the way the book was read aloud. Never heard anything as bad before & hope this is just a one off.
Still the book is very good. I got to know & understand the characters. If you can overlook the narration it still is a good tale.

Brilliant slightly twisted story

Absolutely love this story 1st read as a teen a d have read multiple times since!! Live the way the story twists through the generations of 1 family and the things they do!!! Really enjoyable read although not so keen on the way it's read too long pauses at inappropriate places.

Great story

Brilliant story, couldn’t stop listening. I’m not sure why the recording sounded a little like automated answerphone voice, but soon got used to it. Otherwise a good performance.

My favourite book ruined by the narrator

I have loved this book for as long as I can remember, and have read it many times over years. I thought I’d give the audiobook a go. I have listened to many audiobooks and have thoroughly enjoyed being read to as I drive.

What a huge disappointment this was though. I honestly thought at first this was a robot reading. The narrator sounded like she had limited time to garble the story. There was little punctuation, and if I hadn’t known the story well, and the “big” moments and twists, I would have missed them, so quickly were they garbled.

She completely ruined this for me. She sounded like a 13 year old reading out loud in class, trying to finish her page before final bell. Terrible.

Narrator was terrible

Would you try another book written by Sidney Sheldon or narrated by Shannon Engemann?

Would like to listen to this story and others by the author but NOT BY THIS NARRATOR. Narrator rushed and as a result little pauses or drama. Was so off-putting I couldn't listen any more.

What will your next listen be?

Not sure

What didn’t you like about Shannon Engemann’s performance?

Felt like the reading was rushed, little in the way of pauses, Drama and accents were poor. Very off-putting.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment because I wanted to hear the story and purchase the further books in the series.

Excellent story. Pity about narration

I was enjoying the story but had to give up. The narrator is amateurish and truly spoilt my enjoyment.
