Summary
Matt and Liz may have retired from the police, but that doesn't mean a quiet life.
An old friend's sister disappears without a trace. There's no sign of foul play, but she'd been acting very peculiarly....
Meanwhile, Liz's cousin, Christie, comes to stay. She takes an immediate - and uncharacteristic - dislike to the local bookshop owner, Gina. Why does everyone put up with her awful behavior?
Hunting will-o'-the-wisps on the marshes can be a very dangerous hobby.
Christie is convinced that Gina is manipulating everyone around her. Is she onto something dangerous or just pushing her new friends away?
No one believes her suspicions until another friend goes missing late at night on the misty Fen marshes.
Can Matt and Liz uncover the truth in time to save lives?

Was this intended as a parody?
I hesitate to review this book, worried as I am that I’ve made the mistake of not realising that the author intended it as a parody of the genre. I kept thinking that the silliness would be halted at some point, veil torn aside and the real story brought into the light of day. No such luck. This is the unlikeliest of tales. The motivation of the evil mastermind the flimsiest … surely this is a joke? Avoid this foolishness.

Excellent narrator in Matthew Lloyd Davies
At last, a male narrator who doesn't feel the need to over act female characters, instead he reads their dialogue to perfection. No matter how good a narrator is, a male acting out female characters and vice versa can just end up sounding comedic. Jonathan Keeble is an example of a great narrator but when reading female characters can sound ridiculous. And so this narrator is a welcome change.
Story is entertaining too!

another great story
I love the story line, decriptin is really good but it's a shame that the locals come from the same county as The Archers and they are miles apart. Don't try if it can't be done, just read.

Love this author but…
I found this book dull, with the strangest narration. The performance started incredibly slowly and then sped up so quickly that I had to check the settings. This could well be the editing involved but I found it most disconcerting.
Having read most of the author’s other books I looked forward to this one but found the characters irritating and the plot, ridiculous.
I will try another in the series in case this one was a glitch and reading some of the glowing reviews this one has, it may be just personal preference.

couldn't finish
I love Joy Ellis and her work but I couldn't finish this one.
Some of the characters just seemed two dimensional and that weakened the overall plot. I desperately hope this was a weak link and that the next book in this series will be back to its brilliant best

Enjoyable entertainment
A little bit pushed to believe some folk could so easily be manipulated, but overall a pleasant way to pass some time.

Another gripping Fenland story
As usual Matt, Liz and their cousin keep you listening. The “baddie” is highlighted early on, but the denouement will have you wondering! Great to have the extra tales.

Fantastic
Joy Ellis never fails to impress and this is another fantastic book. It is another eerie murder mystery set on the Fens with several sub-ploys to keep things interesting. Highly recommended series and author!
