About this listen

Remember Wayne County and the Electric Chairs? Long before drag queens dominated the media, before gender-bending, before punk, even before Stonewall, there was Jayne County. From the 60s to the 90s she was the craziest, the most extreme queen ever to hit a rock 'n' roll stage. She's known and worked with Warhol, Bowie, and Derek Jarman, been an actress, a singer and a prostitute. She's the world's original rock 'n' roll trans star, crossing the genders in the full glare of publicity. Man Enough to Be a Woman is the wild, hilarious, and shameless account of Jayne's life from her cissy-boy childhood in Georgia to her 90s renaissance, as a new wave of superstars claim her as their inspiration.

Fascinating insight

Knew of Jayne County from reading about Warhol, and the New York punk/new wave scene, but wow what a fascinating life she has lead. Enjoyed it so much I listened to it twice over. Laughed out loud too, what a legend she is. Thanks Jayne!

The best raw autobiography ever

This really inspired me as a trans woman, it’s honest, funny and straight to the point.
Jayne county deserves more credit for being a pioneer and trail blazer for the underground punk scene and is one of a kind. Thanks Jayne love you 😘xxx

Thrilling and empowering!

I must admit I knew very little about Jayne County before this but I’m so glad i had the curiosity to listen. Her life is full of wild tales of drag, nightlife, punk rock and performing, thrilling adventures in NYC, Berlin and London, intriguing characters, many of them famous, and empowering journeys of self-discovery, especially around her gender and sexuality. I particularly loved Jayne’s narration of the book - her attitude and sass grows on you. This is the story of one woman unapologetically living her truth!

A Life of Exquisite Wrecking

Jayne is THEE queen of punk. Growing up in straight south America in the fifties, Wayne/Jayne documents her rise from a "wrecking" street queen, to "wrecking" the world in her own inimitable style. An Anthropological journey through the queer underground and the music underground. Jaynes voice, attitude and balls carry this story in its truest vein.

The Mother of us all knocks it out of the park⚾

All you could possibly want in a rock and roll memoir, cute boys, outrageous songs/performances, strategic name dropping, and the commemoration of those who didn't live to tell their tales. A powerful, wonderful book made more so by the passionate performance of La County herself. You're an inspiration Girl🌹
