About this listen
When the Night Foxes boldly break into the Fourth Precinct’s Evidence Building, it causes quite the stir. The break-in is daring enough, but their method shreds the magical wards and protections on the building like confetti paper. To say the police are ‘alarmed’ by this is the understatement of the century.
As a Magical Examiner, Henri Davenforth is, of course, immediately called in. Quite to his astonishment, Captain Gregson has him work the case like a detective. Even more astounding, he assigns Henri a partner - The Shinigami Detective.
The woman is famous for killing the most destructive rogue witch of the century, and no one is quite certain where she’s from. Every officer in the precinct is either in awe of her, or a little frightened by her. Henri is just baffled. What is he supposed to do with a partner?
Hopefully, killing one witch makes Jamie Edwards enough of an expert on magic to be helpful, as the thieves aren’t content to just break into one building. They, in fact, seem to have an agenda - as with each theft, they take magical objects. It’s all mounting to a dangerously powerful, magical construct, capable of toppling the wards on any building.
And no one has any idea what the thieves true target is.
©2018 Alisha Yockey (P)2022 Alisha YockeyIt is very hard not to fall in love with the characters. Indeed, it is pointless trying. Surrender to their charm and embrace them. They are richly painted, wonderfully individual and superbly voiced by the cast.
Ah, the cast. I was surprised to find that it was only two voice artists. I had felt sure that there were more from the variety. They bring every word off the page and the characters to a vibrant life.
The setting is a steampunk/magic mashup that could have gone horribly wrong but instead works well. We only get a glimpse of how magic works but I look forward to learning more as I read the rest of the series.
This book is fresh and original and stands out for that. Well written, well performed, well worth the read. I am delighted that taking a change on an author that I didn't know and a book with hardly any reviews brought me this near perfect experience.
I loved the gentle tone and superb performance

The main character is bright and exuberant in everything she approaches, using pop culture references frequently in her humour, much to the bafflement of those around her. Trying to simultaneously fit into a new life in a new world (alternate reality), new job and make new friends, she faces misogyny and 18th century values as a modern woman with skills as an ex special ops agent. The interwoven magic and magical creatures within the new world she finds herself in, blend comically with her knowledge of modern day living as she tries to make improvements wherever she goes during her travels around the city solving the case.
We watch the friendship between her and her partner bloom throughout the book which is very sweet.
I loved the narration. It worked so well with the book being written as a journal/case file. The narrators really brought the characters to life and I feel the audio version will have surpassed the print version of this book because of the way it has been narrated. Excellent job.
Light hearted, fun easy listening
