Summary

Nate is a professor at the university, content with his life, his job, and his partner David. But when he jumps in to defend a student under attack and is injured himself, Nate becomes a leader in the campus movement to end sexual assault. When David doesn’t understand his militant reaction, Nate feels abandoned and betrayed, and begins to question their relationship.

David's love for Nate is deep and true, but he can’t support Nate’s confrontational stance, fearing that the consequences will destroy his career. Forced to choose between his love for Nate and his own sense of what’s right, David feels trapped in a hopeless impasse.

Colin, an Irish Sergeant in the campus police force, is a legend on campus. A fierce protector of assault victims, he is merciless in pursuit of their assailants. When he meets Joshua, a Title IX consultant, sparks fly, and their relationship quickly becomes passionate.

Joshua wants more from Colin, much more, but Colin clings to his independence, fighting against his feelings for the soft-spoken psychologist. When Colin’s past comes back to haunt him, an explosive quarrel sends Joshua home without a word. Will Colin care enough to seek him out?

It would take a miracle to resolve these issues and bring these men together.

Love's Magic is a gay romance featuring two couples, who will both find their HEA.

An interesting collection of intertwining characters.

I feel like this was a real-life read of an established couple reaching a crossroads and a new attraction blossoming onto a second chance at love. I really enjoyed these couples and feel this was a uniquely written collection. The style did take a little while for me to sink into but once I was emersed in the lives I needed to know what happened next. I really enjoyed the characters progress and how it was very authentically real and would match real-life scenarios.

I felt for Nate and David and my heart broke as they appeared to break. I did feel like I was coming into this story about halfway through. I felt like I was missing something but once I got past that my heart was opened to the hardships both Nate and David face together and individually.

I loved the intertwining links between all the characters and how the author did this was fantastic. I loved getting to know Joshua and Colin and their connection was hot! I feel these two were the perfect match and I’m so glad they found their ways back to each other even if their separation broke my heart.

All in all, this was a steamy, realistic story with great characters, serious real-life topics and loves that faced hardships and came out on the other side stronger and better for it. A great collection and realistic read!!!

Thanks for reading!

Painfully topical

I wish this book wasn’t so relevant, but it is. Although crime is at its lowest level in years, it does still exist. Violence still takes place in our world. And college campuses are not immune. Women get drunk and then assaulted. Men can get gang raped for being too ‘gay’. People can get mugged. The high-profile incident earlier this month is proof no one is guaranteed safety and security.

This book takes place with the backdrop of campus violence. Each man in the story has a distinct role to play. Colin is the cop. He’s blunt, honest, and wants perpetrators prosecuted. He sees things as black and white. Joshua, a Title IX consultant, works in the gray areas. His job is to ensure students are treated fairly. It’s a job I’d never heard of. (Although being Canadian definitely has something to do with that. I guess our student liaisons would be an equivalent.)

Nate is the young professor who intervenes during an assault on a young woman and himself becomes a victim. No longer willing to hide in the shadows, he becomes a leader in the movement to end violence on campus. A crusader to get the college administration to pay attention to what is going on and to be proactive rather than reactive. David is his partner and he worries about Nate. He sees pitfalls in being branded a troublemaker. His cautionary stance is a point of friction between the two men.

So two couples. One clearly established and one that’s just beginning. With the reality of violence in their shared community, things are bound to get complicated.

I really enjoyed this book. Something about the characters compelled me. The men drew me in to their struggles. I have to say I related to Nate the most and Colin the least, but I suspect that was how the author intended it. Or maybe not. Each reader will have their own reaction. I will say I was annoyed it took Colin so long to get his head on straight. At least once he did, he was all in.

Walker Williams is a narrator I enjoy and this book was a challenge. There is a lot of head hopping – changing of point of view – even within scenes. It can be tough for a narrator to change so abruptly and bring the listener along with them. Also, in print books, scene changes are denoted with double line spaces. In an audiobook, we count on the narrator to give that break. They weren’t always there and sometimes it took me a moment to realize we were in a new scene. Was it a little annoying? Yes. Did it detract from the book? No. All that being said, I can strongly recommend this book as it is topical and important. Oh, and two great love stories.

Trials and Love

I loved this book and these characters, especially Nate, David, and Joshua. I had some personal dissatisfaction with Colin, but that is probably just me. I liked Nate’s conviction, and that he was willing to put what he thought was right above all else, including his career. At first, I couldn't understand David. He may have been doing what he thought was best for Nate, but he seemed focused on the material and not what was important to Nate. The difference almost broke them apart and it was heart-rending. David was so afraid that voicing his feelings would break them, so he stayed silent trying to keep them together. When he finally had his 'aha' moment and then poured his feelings out to Nate, it was cathartic and beautiful. I LOVED their story. It was so realistic in describing the challenges and angst that even devoted, established couples can face in their lives, and how it can tear them apart. I loved the way Nate and David came out stronger.

I didn't like the story of Colin and Joshua as much. Although there is instant attraction, they want different things. Colin doesn't want a relationship, just friends with benefits, while Joshua wants something permanent. I liked the way Joshua stuck to his beliefs. To me Colin just seemed selfish. If he knew he wasn't willing to give Joshua what he needed, he should have just let him go instead of continuing to to try to get what HE wanted. Honestly, I was glad when Joshua moved away, and I felt it served Colin right. He seemed stunned that Joshua would actually leave. So full of himself! Then, he proceeded to sleep with a bunch of men to 'forget' Joshua. I don't want to give spoilers, but I hated the way Joshua ended up giving everything up for Colin. His job, his home, his family, all for Colin's love. Colin didn’t give up anything for Joshua, except his freedom to be with other men.

I liked the way the two stories intertwined and the two couples connected and became friends. Also the sex was steamy and intimately beautiful.

Overall, the narration was great. I loved the soft, smooth cadence, but there did seem to be a bit of shift and some unevenness around Chapter 12. It jarred me a little, but didn't detract from the story.

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Wonderful tale full of strong emotions of four men

This was a really enjoyable contemporary romance! A new author with some great characters, an interesting story line and everything works well together.
It's the first time I've read about two separate couples in one book but I found that with the way it was written, everything worked really well. The same as well as it's my first time reading about an already established couple, Nate and David. It was good reading with them already being in love and happy together though what made they relatable was the worries that each man still had about themselves and their worth to the other. Alongside them we have the meeting and developing relationship of Colin and Joshua. Sometimes frustrating with Colin because of his self doubt and how long things took but overall this book is wonderful to read with many heartfelt moment. Because of the different times at which we first meet the MC's, we also then get to read and follow different times of a relationship. It's easy to fall in love with all of the men, each with their endearing qualities and Jan's writing ensured that I was fully engaged in their story's, needing to know how things were going to turn out. I'm really looking forward to book 2, focusing on Colin and Joshua, and seeing how well their doing as their relationship moves forward.
I highly recommend this book and this new author. It's a great contemporary romance with a twist, following two separate relationships that are slightly linked.
Walker Williams is a new to me author who has done well in portraying the variety of strong emotion from the four men throughout the story. His narration keeps your attention through the book, moving along at a steady pace. What I struggled with was the lack of difference between the men's voices. There was very little change to pitch/tone/accent and it made it hard to tell who was narrating when we change POV mid chapter as there was no break between paragraphs.

Wonderful Performance by Walker Williams!

What an absolutely stunning performance by Walker Williams! Mr. Williams’ voice is rich and appealing, and he takes care to use a distinct voice for each character. This is the first opportunity I’ve had to listen to this talented narrator, and I’m looking forward to many more.

Love’s Magic, the first book in Janice Jarrell’s Revolutionary Heart series, is the story of two couples facing… well, some trials.

I always like to see how authors handle established couples and Ms. Jarrell does a really nice job with Nate and David’s story. The love between them is clear and powerful at the start of the novel, and when their issue blows up there’s no doubt how much pain they’re in.

The second couple, Colin and Joshua, have to work their way through more traditional issues. I like how Josh stays true to his values, and makes Colin work to get him back. Total opposites, Ms. Jarrell takes the opportunity to set up the story in the next book, Love’s Trials, and I can tell it’s going to be a doozy.
