Summary

Jun’s not better than me, but we might be perfect together.

Jun’s been a thorn in my side for years. Its only gotten worse since we’re both going after the same promotion. Being in the same room with him makes my heart pound. It’s anger. I can’t let it be anything else.

My family expects me to be the best. I have to earn this promotion and prove that belong on top. But when I catch Jun staring at me with heat in his eyes, medicine is the last thing on my mind. He’s not supposed to be into guys. Could he be into me?

I’ll show him who belongs on top.

Failure isn’t an option, and that’s not a problem...except when it comes to Kairo. The perfectionist doctor has been my only competition since medical school. He’s the only surgeon to ever best me. He’s my biggest rival, and I’m pretty sure he hates me, but he makes me feel...alive.

For years, we’ve sidestepped one another. Now, he’s awakened tantalizing feelings in me that I’ve been trying to ignore for most of my life. Being gay won’t fly in my conservative family. How can I consider coming out before I know he feels the same?

Sparks fly in Love Hurts when Jun and Kairo finally succumb to the forbidden desires that have simmered under the surface for years in this full-length contemporary m/m romance audiobook.

Lovely listen

Kai and Jun were equally matched in school, in work, in everything but love. Jun's parents had a very dated outlook on how Jun should live his life and Kai had an extremely supportive family who was proud of his accomplishments, but also of him.

They'd been competing for years as surgeons and now that a single position for advancement was opening up, they were back at it. But, this time was different. This time, there was more on the line for both of them.

I really enjoyed how this story fell into place and was a great enemies to lover's romance. Jun was given the room, space, and environment to grow and be himself for the first time ever, and Kai had to fight for what he wanted for the first time. An exciting listen!

Great enemies to lovers

What if the hate you felt for him wasn’t really hate? What if it was something else? This was a question both Jun and Kairo found themselves face with, and it was one that both fascinated and frightened the heck out of them. They knew what to do with hate, but had no clue what to make of it if it was...more like...love.

Kairo is the oldest of his brothers, and the inly one who hasn’t found his guy, yet. His job has been his everything, but he’s starting to want more. Jun’s parents are never happy with his accomplishments; they’re never enough. He has spent his life fitting into their mold, despite it not being enough; and he wants more. Jun and Kairo make me want to jump in the book and hug them, both. I want to yank Kairo away from his miserable parents, too. I enjoyed watching their relationship progress from hate to neutral, from neutral to interested, and from interested to pursuing each other. Could they be more? I was captivated by their story, and had to find out. I listened to this in one sitting, at a faster pace than normal. Someone once told me your brain adjusts to the speed, snd they were right. At one point I was listening to it at 2.2, because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to sleep until I finished. I had to find out how their story ended. Yes...I could understand the narrator perfectly. No...I can’t explain how that’s even possible.

This is book 6 in the series, and I read (and listened) to them all. I live this series, and this family. This story is a great addition to it. It was written in a way that kept me on my toes, grinning, laughing, concerned, and dying to know the rest of the story. If that’s not good writing, then I don’t know what is. I would absolutely recommend this book, this series, and these authors. They write well together, and separately.

Austin Jay did a really good job with the characters. I really enjoyed his voice for Kairo. Sometimes it reminded me of JF Harding’s voice for Farrow Keene. I’m quite okay with that. I hope to hear more from Austin Jay.

This is the final book in the Cladwell brothers series and I have loved every one. This book follows Kairo, the oldest of the brothers and is a fantastic enemies to lovers story.

Enemies to lovers

It’s about time Kairo got his own HEA, he totally deserved it.

This is an enemies to lovers story and it was absolutely amazing. Kairo’s story was everything I wanted it to be and so much more.

Narrator’s performance was fantastic.

story great narration needs work

I found that the narrator had lots of Irish style accents especially when it came to Jun who is Korean. outside of that the story was on point and just as great as the others in this series

Steamy competition

One position and two applicants make for difficult romantic waters. Jun is trying to live up to nearly impossible parental expectations and Kairo has those in addition to a conservative family who would never accept that he is gay. When these two longtime rivals that clearly feel more for each other than just competition are in line for the same job, it seems inevitable that someone will get hurt and/or hurt their family. Thanks to good advisors, our two guys learn to evaluate what is most important in their lives and go for it. Austin Jay gives a spot on performance. Characters are nicely delineated with the voices and he captures all the emotions.

Hilarious

This was a really funny enemies to lovers story. The characters were really well developed, and their relationship built up really well.

The narration was alright but I really enjoyed the story behind it.

My favorite of this entire series!

Out of all the Caldwell brothers, Kairo always seemed like the golden child. First born, successful surgeon, confidante to all the other brothers.... it didn't seem like there was anything Kairo couldn't do. Maybe that's why I loved seeing Jun challenge him in this book so much. The concept of two med school rivals butting heads yet again in their competition for a promotion was so fun and exciting, and I thought it was executed really nicely. The heated sparks of passion, bitterness of prior wrongdoings, and intense focus these two men gave off was thrilling to listen to. As Jun and Kairo realized their mutual hatred was masking some pretty intense desire, it was easy to let myself bask in all the deliciously steamy sexual tension. Austin Jay was a fantastic narrator for these guys--so expressive and emotional in all the right ways. I felt like I was there with Kairo and Jun as they figured out how to balance their professional relationship with the intense flames of their attraction. In addition to the fantastic romance, Jun's journey towards self-acceptance was particularly moving for me. I didn't expect this story to get so deeply emotional, but the decisions Jun had to make were excruciating. Whether it's because I knew how hard the journey was for Jun or that I just connected with him and Kairo so intensely, I was overwhelmed with happiness when these two managed to make a real relationship work. Seeing them happy together amongst the other Caldwell couples was the perfect way to close out this series for good.
