Summary

From USA Today best-selling author Sydney Jane Baily

From the lush English countryside to the glittering society of Victorian London, and the shabbier side of its gambling hells, Lord Despair thought he'd left the worst behind in the Burmese jungle. He was wrong.

Lord Simon Devere returns from the Burmese War haunted by the vivid memory of his slain cousin and powerless to know reality from dreams. Unable to sleep lest he awaken in the cell of his nightmares, he sits in the dark, incapable of believing he is truly home - and safe - in England.

Jenny Blackwood is determined not to let her mother and sisters succumb to an unkind fate. With a head for numbers, she becomes the skilled bookkeeper "Mr. Cavendish". One unexpected client is the nobleman cruelly named by gossips as Lord Despair.

With the estate's coffers mysteriously dwindling, Jenny goes where others fear to tread: into the darkened room of the unstable earl. Encouraged by her tenacity, Simon believes he can become the man he once was. However, as friendship quickly sparks into passion, they discover the greatest danger lies ahead of them, and the biggest threat to Jenny may be Lord Despair himself.

Wonderful..

This was a great story, except for a lot of the middle. The part where Simon went to Germany for help with his PTSD was too long and drawn out. No way did it have to be 404 pages. BUT the first part of the book made up for the parts that got a little boring.

I thought Simon and Jenny were wonderful, as was Jenny’s mother and 3 sisters, as well as Lord Cambrey. BUT Ned was a real jerk and so was Simon’s uncle.

I have to say, it was different that the hero was quick to tell Jenny of his brutal nightmares. Instead of a hero keeping them secret, as if he’s ashamed of them. I think that’s what made the book so much better. I hate when things like that are going on in a book and as I read I just keep telling the hero “tell her, for pete’s sake.” So annoying.

Okay! One reviewer said there wasn’t enough sex! Jeez, do some readers just read for the sex? There was plenty of sexual tension and lots of necking, petting, feeling and kissing that went on throughout the book. The only thing you didn’t read about was the screwing. It was not full of sex. There was just enough of everything, IMO.

As to the narration: You don’t get much better than Tim Campbell. He’s a wonderful narrator.

THIS WAS A WONDERFUL SURPRISE FOR ME

Not having ever read this author, I didn't know what to expect. However, with Tim Campbell as narrator, I figured it had to be worth a listen. LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!! I can't wait for the next in the series.

PLEASE PLEASE have Tim Campbell narrate all in the series. His voice is just wonderful to listen to!

Do I recommend this... ABSOLUTELY!!

Funny and sweet

A story about the English nobility, but with a twist. The hero may just be Ginnie instead of Simon. This story has a delightful twist, and it is filled with humorous moments that made me laugh out loud more than once. If this had been on my Kindle, I would have highlighted the more perfect turns of phrase. Quite a pleasant read. I’m going to look for more by this author.

Perfect

I loved this book. I loved the unique characters and storyline. I loved that it was more about the people and their growth and emotions (and not about some over-the-top villain).
There was just the right amount of steam... not too much and not too little. I obviously loved the narration because who doesn't love Tim Campbell?
I can't wait to listen to the next book... although I'm also a little worried because this book set my expectations so high! Well done to the author for writing such an enjoyable book.

It's Okay.

It's just not exciting; tension is lacking. It needed more, more of everything. Meaner villains, a meaner hero and a truly flawed heroine.

Pretty Awful

I made myself listen to give the book a chance. Could not listen past chapter 3.

Choppy

I totally loved this book up until the last 3 hours or so. The recording was so choppy I missed so much that I was never sure what was going on.
It’s a shame. I would really have enjoyed it if the recording was right.

Good story

The initial storyline and characters drew me in during the first half. By the second half I was weary of the detailed tongue thrusting and intimate scenes. Then the mystery drew me back in again during the second half. It bogs down a bit in the middle, but all in all an interesting story. I just wish it had been cleaner. I didn’t feel like pulling up a chair beside their bed. The excess of intimate scenes didn’t move the story along, and they seemed to act as filler, as is the usual case in this watered-down genre.
