Summary
We live in difficult times. Life so often seems like a turbulent river threatening to drown us and destroy our world. Why, then, shouldn’t we cling to the certainty of the comfortable - to our deep-seated habits and familiar ways? Because, Pema Chödrön teaches, that kind of fear-based clinging keeps us from the infinitely more powerful experience of being fully alive.
The teachings she presents here - known as the “Three Commitments” - provide a treasure trove of wisdom for learning to step right into the unknown, to completely and fearlessly embrace the groundlessness of being human. When we do, we begin to see not only how much better it feels to live an openhearted life, but we find that we begin to naturally and more effectively reach out to help and heal all those around us.
Critic reviews
"Chödrön’s strength is her ability to communicate to a general audience that people are essentially good, that they can be free from fear, and that they can always try again when they fail." (Publishers Weekly)

A Book for the Times
I loved the book and listening to it during June 2020, as we are amid a Pandemic and Protest. It helped me to until and practice letting things go and concentrate on myself.

Narrator
Loved the book and will listen to it over and over but did not care for the narration. I would have greatly preferred a voiceover more similar to Pema’s voice. I associate comfort with Pema and this particular voice of the narrator was not at all a wise or comforting one.

Incomplete recording
I have sent this back because I was too irritated by the recording. I liked the narrator. Unfortunately, at intervals of about forty seconds there was a chunk of missing sound of unknown duration. The break in the story created and the trying to work out what the meaning actually was was just too frustrating. This is a basic quality control problem. It should not have made it through into a customer experience in this way. Pretty disappointing.

Much needed awakening in today’s world
Deep and profound yet simple concepts discussed. A must read for an unsettled perturbed mind battling between stability and uncertainty, reality and hope, pain and pleasure and more importantly searching for the meaning of existence and purpose.

The first audio book I made it all the way through
Many of the things talked about were things I already do or attempt to do. I learned a lot about how to be more selfless and to have a perspective of others lives. I think most people should listen to this if they are struggling in their life or are unsure about how life is "supposed" to be.

A much needed book
As I am going through some emotional times in my life, currently, this book helped me understand the importance of facing life during every type of feeling and emotion instead of trying to control and “ fix” my emotions. The time of the lone wolf is over. Thank you for this book🌟🦋💫❤️🌸🙏

I had never heard this method
I usually try to breathe in calm and clarity, but this describes the advantage of breathing in the heaviness of our situation and breathing out tranquility... really powerful!

Amazing as always
Pema Chodron has this unbelievably accessible way of explaining how to use Buddhist practice to create a happier life. Here she explains that one thing we need to learn is to live knowing that anything can change at any moment. We can be prisoners of these fears or we can embrace the reality of our situation. And she does it all with a light hand, full of compassion and understanding.
