loved every minute of it. german pronounciation was a bit OTT, but not preventing me enjoying this listen

great story about love, lust, deceit and power

As a fan of this author, the Charly Muffin series and gradually audibly munching my way through the rest of his books I feel this book touches on so much more than just the spying. Published in 1991-I personally love the irony of Fremantle’s then concepts and where we are now in 2024 globally mixed with human nature & psychology. I also recommend ‘Target’ where fiction and real events cross paths a bit to close for comfort

It’s all in the game or the worm has turned.

I really enjoyed the story and was engaged from beginning to end.

Other reviewers have complained about the narrator’s portrayal of the German accent but I doubt that her diction and intonation was captivating.

However, much of the narration sounded mechanical and scenes were changed far too quickly with no gap.

The voice and flow also sounded manufactured artificially in an AI sort of way for significant sections. It was quite odd.

The most annoying yet almost addictive to listen to was the pronunciation of the word Chancellory. It is quite unbelievable that this was not pointed out at the time of recording and corrected.

Freemantle’s narrators often have this sort of quirk and in the Charlie Muffin stories the narrators insists not only on sounding the silent S in the word Islay, Charlie’s favourite malt whisky but makes a right hash of it by, instead of pronouncing it Eye-la, saying Izzlay. The mind boggles!

This cannot be accidental and must be Freemantle’s calling card which is perhaps discussed with the narrator beforehand deciding upon which word they will trash.

Consequently, I knocked a star off for being annoying but added it back on for ingenuity :-)

Too much celery in the salad

The heavy handed German accents were difficult to deal with but I persevered as the story was intriguing. However, the pronunciation of Jutta (which should be Yutta), the Chancellery (should be chan celry not Chan celery), and Adenauer to name but three were grating in the extreme. I did wonder if it had been read using AI. I won't listen to anything narrated by Heather Wilds again.

Shocking pronunciation
