The performance makes it…

I started reading the book but ended up reading and listening to finish in time for book group, and wow, the story is only enhanced by the narration. I ended listening more purely for the added depth and tone. Brilliant.

A fantastic epic, perfectly read!

A really beautiful story told across eras with pitch perfect narration. Would recommend to fans of David Mitchell.

Wow! What a novel.!

This book is definitely worth reading or listening to - such excellent writing- you feel you have lived through the 50 years these children tread.

A dip into people's lives over the years.

This was a really good listen, following the lives of a group of children (at the start) and their varies paths through life, up and downs, good and bad.

It is a great book, with lots to think about by the end.

I listened at 1.45 speed (as I'd forgotten how soon my bookclub meeting was!) and it seemed to be a natural speed.

Beautifully written but poorly performed

The story is beautifully written and deals with the subject matter in a very imaginative and interesting way, but it is impossible to listen to, as the narrator delivers it like a pantomime dame almost! Will have to return the book, not something I often do, but this is impossible to listen to in my humble opinion!

Scintillating

Superb writing read with accuracy and truth to the characters.
As well as getting to know the fascinatingly ordinary characters through glimpses of their lives over the years, London is laid out to the reader - in all its messy wonder.
Excellent.

Great Book but Ghastly Narration

This is a cracking story well told with a wealth of characters and a rounded account of interesting lives and times but oh that narration is excruciating.

Fabulous narration

Enjoyable book but Imogen Church was the star. I will listen to this again because she brought the text to life so vibrantly and sympathetically.

I loved this this novel and the narration is one of the best I've ever listened to.
