Summary

Mortuary technician Cassie Raven believes the last thoughts of the dead linger like static in the air....

Cassie has always had a strange affinity with death, ever since her parents were killed in a car crash when she was four. At least that's what she grew up believing....

But that was a lie. Cassie's father is alive. He was convicted of murdering her mother and spent years behind bars. Now he's out—and he's looking for her.

He swears he didn't do it. And Cassie wants to believe him.

To find the truth, she must turn detective. As she seeks answers, help is to be found in inexplicable places—for the dead are ready to talk.

Not a patch on book 1 in the series

I LOVED the first Cassie Raven book, and was so looking forward to this new one. Which means I am genuinely gutted to say that this one just isn’t a patch on book 1.

The plot here focuses on Cassie’s parents and their back story. It’s dull, slow and predictable.

The book ignores all the stuff that made book 1 so great, and completely fails to develop any of the main characters. Cassie is still in the mortuary fighting the same battles with pompous pathologists. Flyte, despite what happened in book 1, is still dismissive and sarcastic when Cassie offers up evidence. Their relationship has not developed either professionally or romantically. And what’s more, the mystery around Cassie’s seemingly supernatural talent is only fleetingly touched on too.

The only character that does develop is Keiran, who goes from an alcoholic, drug addicted rough-sleeper to well-balanced co-detective seemingly overnight. It just doesn’t feel believable.

So many of the great setups that book 1 left us with are unanswered.

I heartily recommend Body Language. But maybe give this one a miss.

Interesting and Unexpected Second Book In The Seri

I was looking forward to this after the first book but to start with I wasn't too sure about it. I'm very glad I stuck with it though as it is really good. Can't wait for the next one. I do hope that Cassie and Flyte will get together even if it's only once and they pretend to regret it.

It is Put-cheen not Pusheen

This book wasn’t a patch on the 1st.

The most irritating part of it was the constant incorrect pronunciation of the word Poitin. If it had been just once it would be fine but the word is said so many times through out and the narrator’s mispronunciation
just got me irritated.

Enjoyable

Like this audible book a lot. Will watch out for next books in the series which are similar to the Patricia Cornwell ones I have read for years

My favourite series in a long time

Wonderful characters, such a refreshing change from the boring ‘crime thriller’ that I usually read. Excellent narration as well. I can’t wait to hear more about Cassie Raven. The first book gripped me so much I regularly checked for a sequel. The second has done the same so I’ll be checking back for more!
If you’re bored of police procedurals, want more of a personal story, interesting, modern and refreshing characters, with a suggestion of paranormal (or is it?!) thrown in, have a read of this series.

Refreshingly Different.

A very emotive & captivating series. A good variation on the usual murder procedural novels.
The books are well written with excellent narration.
I hope there will be many more to come.
