Summary

High fantasy, low stakes—with a double-shot of coffee.

After decades of raising hell, Viv the orc barbarian is finally hanging up her sword for good. Now she sets her sights on a new dream—one that involves pulling more shots than punches. Armed with hope and a hard-earned secret, she plans to open the first coffee shop in Thune.

To build something that will last, Viv needs a new crew. She enlists a gruff hob builder shunned by humans, and a shy baker whose cinnamon rolls are to die for. Then there’s Tandri, a charming succubus who’s determined not to let anyone assume anything about her.

But Thune has a shady underbelly that keeps goading Viv to take up her sword once more. New enemies threaten her beloved coffee shop and rag-tag team. And Viv’s adventuring past isn’t so eager to leave her behind—or the fabled piece of loot she took with her.

Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree is a cosy, heartwarming slice-of-life fantasy about found families and fresh starts—perfect for fans of TJ Klune, Katherine Addison and T. Kingfisher.

A cozy, slice of life fantasy

Legends and Lattes is a book that delivers exactly what it promises: high fantasy and low stakes. This is a sweet story about an orc barbarian who wanted to find out where does the other road lead.

The book was a refreshing break from my usual, darker reads and I loved every moment of it!
The characters are well thought out who feel real, despite the fact that they are non-human. The relationship between them feels natural, their inner struggles, relatable.

I particularly liked the pacing of this book. There was never a boring moment and every chapter mattered. The length of the chapters combined with the flawlessness of the writing makes this an easy and enjoyable read.

Travis's descriptions are so expressive that I not only saw everything like a movie but could almost smell the lightly charamelized and nutty scent of the brewing coffee or the sweet, intoxicating aroma of the cinnamon rolls.

This was a bit of a double edged sword for me as I had a constant craving for latte and cinnamon roll every time I set down to read the book.

In Legends and Lattes there is no world threatening event that can only be stopped by the chosen one whose coming was foretold by a prophecy centuries ago. No villain that tries to take over the world. And no world shattering revelations. In Legends and Lattes there is true friendship, perseverance, hard work and a little bit of romance.

If you are looking for a book that puts a smile on your face, you found it.

A violently adorable and heartwarming experience

I had a great time reading this and I can't recommend it enough, it's short and sweet but I can definitely see myself re-listening to it in the future.

a fantastic slice of life story.

what do adventurers do when they want to leave the biz? they set up a coffee shop!

a really nice change of pace to the usual sword and sorcery stuff. great worldbuilding, characterisations and a well paced plot.

travis does sterling work bringingneach character to life. i cant wait to see him grow this universe.

reminiscent of Pratchett in how he implies a wider world and wider technology, i can only expect it to get deeper as the city and people are expanded upon.

also, the "will they, won't they" tension is adorable!

A gentle story

This was a really interesting book and different from others I have read. There is a lot of detail about the 'mundane' parts of owning a coffee shop, but it was oddly enjoyable, even as someone who doesn't drink coffee!

I love fantasy books but sometimes their complex world and lore is taxing. This was exactly what I was looking for, a more simple world with great characters and a relaxing read.

Travis, if this is a sign of whats to come then let it be known im waiting with baited breath!

The world youve built, and the characters you've brought to life in this story are truly captivating. I especially enjoyed your word choices and descriptions - they were warm and charming.

im not usually too into these kinds of novels but this has unexpectedly become a warm favourite of mine. I cant wait to reread!

thank you!

Finely brewed fantasy

A neat story with low stakes that nevertheless serves as a refreshing palette cleanser.

The story retains momentum until the very end, propelled by a captivating main character in her efforts to build a new life for herself.

My only shortcoming would be a few members in the supporting cast feel a little one-note, but this is a minor gripe considering the short and sweet running time.

Medieval fantasy; a brighter outlook yet not naïve

Enjoyable narration. Characters are flawed: relateable and endearing. Story is engaging. A positive perspective.
